Karen Squires

We regret that this information was not included originally.

Regarding Karen Squires, she is not a licensed teacher and does not hold a position of teacher. She possesses special training in the Orton Gillingham method of addressing reading difficulties from the Dyslexia Institute. She works with individual students under the strict direction and supervision of licensed classrooms teachers, the principal and our special education teacher. Her title is Reading Guide. She is not a classroom teacher and a license is not required for her position.

Sarah Hassebroek – File folder # 444513 – MDE has been waiting since the summer for the College of St. Catherine to send one form to them. Diane Garcia from Educator Licensing is concerned about their lack of action on it and has contacted them. We were told it had been sent this summer. Then St. Catherine’s made her fill out her forms all over again, which was unnecessary. Ms. Hassebroek has completed a teacher licensure program in 2007, passed the Praxis exam but also needs to pass it in Spanish for the second part of her licensure. Her permission should have been approved long ago. She teaches 1st – 3rd grade and does not teach Spanish.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS: Charter School Investigation

Of the 143 charter schools in Minnesota, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS obtained the teacher lists for 119 of those schools, and compiled a list of 1,792 teachers. We compared that list with the Minnesota Department of Education's list of 91,000 licensed teachers.

Initially we found 184 teachers at 65 different schools who were not listed on the state database.

We e-mailed the principal or director of each school to confirm our findings. We found many teachers who had a different legal name on their teaching license and other teachers who were no longer with the school.

Based on the information from each school, we found 50 teachers who it appears don't have a valid license and 17 schools that did not respond to our request.
