Berlin International Airport ("Otto Lilienthal")
lies in Tegel, a section of the northern borough of Reinickendorf. Tegel is referred to as the "Frequent Flyer Airport". Tegel has the most scheduled flights of the three airports serving Berlin. In 2003, it served 11.1 million passengers.

During the Berlin Airlift in 1948, the longest runway in Europe (2,400 m) was built at Tegel. Modern facilities were built in the 1970s, and Tegel began to replace Tempelhof International Airport as the main airport of West Berlin. Tempelhof, surrounded by urban development, was too noisy and its runways were too short for modern jumbo jets. During the Cold War, because of the special status of West Berlin, air traffic was restricted to Allied airlines (particularly Air France, Pan American World Airways and British Airways). According to a decade-old plan to replace the three airports currently serving Berlin with one, Berlin-Schönefeld International Airport will be expanded and become Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport (BBI). Tegel will then be closed about six months after operations begin at BBI (planned for 2011) and all flights will move to the newly expanded and renamed Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport.

Tegel Airport is notable for its hexagonal terminal building around an open square, which makes for walking distances as short as 100 ft. from any airplane, through luggage and customs, to taxi or bus.

a.k.a. Berlin Tempelhof (German: Flughafen Tempelhof) is an airport in Berlin, Germany, situated in the south-central borough of Tempelhof-Schönneberg. This airport is commonly known as Tempelhof as well.

Tempelhof is often called the "City Airport". It has mostly commuter flights to other parts of Germany and neighboring countries, since its runway is too small to receive jumbojets.

Tempelhof Airport has two parallel runways. Runway 9L/27R has a length of 2094 metres (6870 feet) and Runway 9R/27L has a length of 1840m (6037ft). Both runways are paved with asphalt. The taxiway is in the shape of a circle around these two runways, with a single terminal on the north side of the airport.

As of July 2004, the airport receives very limited passenger service. In June 2004, it was announced that the German air traffic authorities have given the permission to the operating company of the Berlin airports to discontinue their services at Tempelhof. Consequently, closing of the airport had been scheduled for 30 October 2004, in accordance with the decade old plan to merge the three existing airports in Berlin into one, transforming Schönefeld International Airport into Berlin Brandenburg International Airport. However, the airlines have successfully fought the decision to close Tempelhof, at least for the time being, and, eventually, Tempelhof is due to close in 2007.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport is scheduled to open in 2011, when Tegel airport is scheduled to close. The terminal building at Tempelhof, however, is expected to be preserved, and the airport turned into a park or golf course when the time comes.

Berlin-Schönefeld International Airport (Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld)
is an international airport located in the town of Schönefeld in Brandenburg, adjacent to Berlin's southern border. It is referred to as "The Holiday Airport", as it has mostly international charter flights. Schönefeld was once the major civil airport of East Germany (and only airport serving East Berlin).

It lies outside the city, unlike the other two Berlin airports, Tegel International Airport and Tempelhof International Airport, and therefore is not as much a source of noise pollution.

Schönefeld is slated to be transformed into Berlin Brandenburg International Airport in 2011. Once the new expansion of the terminal starts construction, Tempelhof airport will close (initially slated for October 30, 2004, but still open for the time being) in 2007. Six months after the airport is renamed and the new section opened, Tegel airport is to close.

The airport is served by the Berlin-Schönefeld Flughafen railway station. This station is the terminus of line S9 and S45 of the Berlin S-Bahn, and is served by mainline railways as well.
