The Adventures of Room 122
Miss. Lu & Miss. Maslanko
Social Studies, Grade 1
Specific Outcome
1.1.1 value self and others as unique individuals in relation to their world:
• appreciate how belonging to groups and communities enriches an individual’s identity
• appreciate multiple points of view, languages, cultures and experiences within their groups and communities

As part of a segment in the Grade 1 Social Studies curriculum, students will be encouraged to explore the various cultural backgrounds and identities within their classroom and community. To help fulfill the above specific objectives, a major part of this segment will include hands-on activities and authentic field trip experiences, such as learning about our heritage at Fort Edmonton Park, visiting an Italian restaurant to learn how to make pasta, taking a closer look into the Aboriginal heritage at the Royal Alberta Museum, celebrating Chinese New Years (February 7th) at the China Town Multi-Cultural Centre, and hopping onto a school bus out to the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village.

Throughout all of these activities, we will also examine other specific outcomes as pertains to the particular activity. But for the purpose of this digital map, we will focus solely on the overarching theme of cultural uniqueness, whereby every culture is valuable and important to the enrichment of our identity as a class and as individuals. Through these various experiences, students will develop an appreciation for the multi-cultural communities that surround them.

This digital map serves as a wonderful Social Studies tool throughout the year, to help students log and reflect upon their experiences. After each field trip, Miss. Maslanko and I will create a brief description of that day's activity for the students to refer to. Then students are to respond, in the appropriate marker, to the following three questions:

1) What is unique about this culture?
2) What is something new I discovered about this culture?
3) How does this culture relate to me?

An Grade 6 study buddy will be assigned with two Grade 1 students to help them with their comments.

This digital mapping activity will help students retain what they have learned, what they are learning, and build upon their previous experiences.
