Ioki Cave
A relatively brief cave becomes a beautiful gorge, which winds into the hills for at least a kilometre. It's definately worth walking all the way to the end, where there are a few waterfalls. This place is amazing, like a lost world. Park at the ageing conbini across the road. Follow the line of statues from near the big red scaffolding. Don't be fooled by how it looks from the outside..

One of the most laid back cafes in all of Kochi! Beautiful views, very friendly staff, and excellent coffee. Try the cappuccino!

Monet Gardens, Kitagawa
A beautiful replica of Claude Monet's garden in Giverny, France. These gardens have the official stamp of approval from the Monet foundation, so you know you're seeing the real thing! 700yen for entry or 1500yen for a yearly pass.
There's a restaurant, winery, and gift shop running all year round. Also an all you can eat and drink beer garden which runs from July to mid September (you need to book).

a bar/club with a "ragged-chique" interior. usually plays chill-out session music or light R&B on weekdays, and R&B/Reggae/Hiphop on weekends. one of the most popular clubs in Kochi city.

one of the most popular gathering points in the minds of the locals. it's only been "Best Western" for the past year, so everyone still thinks of it as the Washington Hotel.

Tonno Italian Restaurant
Great restaurant serving pasta, pizza, and other Italian delights. The dishes cater for local tastes, so don't expect 100% authentic Italian. However, the food is still first class! They also do nomihoudai for group bookings.

Ton Puku Tei (Tonkatsu restaurant)
A first class Tonkatsu restaurant with a very small menu. This is ok, as they do Tonkatsu very very well. Keep an eye out for the ebi-fry as big as your forearm! Delicious - but ask yourself, are you really that hungry?

Senpuku Cafe
An old japanese house which has been converted into a relaxing little cafe. From the 55, take the turn signposted for the Yuinooka Dome, drive down that road for a few hundred metres and it's hiding on the left, next to a community centre.

Taishin Gekijo Cinema
The mysterious Yasuda Mountain Cinema! Attached to the back of a restaurant hidden amongst the hills and rice fields. This is a tiny old place run by a local musician (he sometimes inserts little performances before or after the film if you're special). A New Moon Cafe
Bright, relaxing atmosphere, with great coffee, cakes and meals. Plenty of books and magazines to read, but mostly in Japanese. On the 5th floor of the building just opposite Ichiya.

Chez Mon Pere
Excellent curry, pastas, pizzas, salads and cakes. This unique dome shaped building has beautiful large aquariums around the restaurant. Great cappuccino too!

A normal Shinto shrine, but also has a good park for cherry blossom viewing next to it on a hillside. 5 minute walk from Tosa-yamada station.

a large cave with a guided tour. there is also a 'challenge course' in which you don helmets with lights on them and crawl around and between extremely narrow spaces in the cave. NOT for claustrophobics.

A great onsen in a beautiful hotel. 800 yen to use the baths. Open 10am-11pm. Great outdoor baths which are relly fun when it's raining or a little cold!

Orange Cafe
Great little cafe with simple Italian food. Very natural, a lot of it is organic, and very vegetarian friendly (they'll remove meat or make you veggie pasta) Great coffee. They also sell bread, coffee, cheese and juices.

Otenohama
This area used to be reknowned for the amazing corals and tropical fish that you could see underwater. Unfortunately the sand from Ya-Sea Park is gradually being washed round this small cape- go and check out the coral and fishies before they get completely swamped! There are also 'twinned' shinto rocks to the right of the lighthouse- a good photo op at sunset.

Kuroshio Hotel onsen
Strictly speak this is a 'ofuro' not an onsen, but you wouldn't know the difference... great after a day on the beach at Ya-Sea Park or Otenohama

Kitagawa Village Onsen
This is a nice, friendly little onsen about 20 minutes drive from route 55. It's been recently refurbished with both Japanese and Western themed outdoor baths added. The family bath is also worth a try - there's a private outdoor bath, plus a giant yuzu shaped indoor bath.
Entry costs 500 yen for adults, 250 yen for kids. The private bath is an additional 500 yen per person.

Makino Botanical Gardens
Interesting garden next to Chikurinji temple (part of the 88 temple loop on Shikoku). There are spots where you can view the home of a large number of heron, and also a very big greenhouse holding many interesting plants. Great for when parents visit.

Yasshii Park
A safe swimming beach, with nets to keep (most of) the jellyfish out during the later summer months. There are some restaurants and a clothing shop next to the car park.

Yasuda Auto Camp and Swimming Hole
The Auto camp offers camping grounds as well as semi-luxury cabins with fully equipped kitchens. The camp is located along a rushing river and near a beautiful swimming hole. Reservations for the cabins are necessary. (20 min. north from the center of Yasuda)

Konomineji (temple 27)
Temple 27 of Kobo Daishi’s 88 Temples of Shikoku. Konomineji sits atop one of Yasuda’s western mountains and has a breathtaking view of the ocean and the lands surrounding Yasuda. A great meditation spot!

Yamanami
The best food in the east. This restaurant has a rustic feel with the tables and stools made from the local cedar trees. The fare is Japanese style and the niku-don is highly recommended. (Across from the public office, up the hill a little)

Shintaro Restaurant
Located on the bank of the Nahari river next to a wild boar farm. Shintaro restaurant has great views over the reedy banks and has delicious set meals around 1000-1500 yen. In summer there are tables outside and lanterns in the evening. (2km from Nahari on the road signposted to Futamata and Kitagawa-mura, it is on the right bank of the Nahari river)

Shittoroto Tea and Curry House
A fabulous curry house that offers teas from all over the world. Each day brings two delicious house curries to choose from as part of an excellent set meal. Try not to worry about the name as you're eating.. (On the outskirts of the city close to the whale museum)

Hotstumisakiji (Temple 24)
Sits above the Misaki (cape). There is a youth hostel on the temple grounds. The views are amazing and the temple complex is lovely and peaceful. Next to the temple is Muroto Lighthouse. It has the largest lens in Japan.

Kongochoji (Temple 26)
Set near the top of Muroto’s western hills. The lotus decorated steps leading to the temple are said to bring luck if you leave a one yen coin on each flower. Don’t miss the museum at the bottom of the main temple.

Shinshoji (Temple 25)
This temple was built to pray for safety on the big sea and a big catch of fish. On its grounds are a youth hostel, several thousand steps and the temple itself. Housed inside the temple are thousands of golden statues.

Ikumi Beach
The big surfing beach of Kochi-ken. Ikumi has a long stretch of golden sandy beachfront, there are small but existent waves and outdoor showers.

Shirahama
This is a lovely cove beach with the most prized white sand (hence the name White Beach). In the summer there are floating platforms to swim out to and plenty of food vendors along the beachfront. You can camp at Shirahama beach for around 400 yen, you pay at the hotel and if you need to you can hire tents too.

It's a sand onsen where they cover you in sand that is heated from an underground spring.

Happy Raft
White water rafting: They usually have someone on staff that speaks english. The rapids are good, nothing too challenging but you'll get wet, and you can jump from a rock into the water when they stop for a break.

Place to eat
I don't remember how far past the turnoff for expressway this restaurant is located, but it's a couple of building on the right with a parking lot and building (bank or something) on the left overlooking the river. The food portions are huge here and you can even order wild boar (inoshishi donburi)

Yanase Auto Camp

Yanase Auto camp is a beautiful campsite with some of the easts most breathtaking views. You can go fishing in the pond and find your own private swimming hole.

Nijusanshi Onsen
Some of the best bathing facilities in the east. A little pricey at 800 yen but well worth it after sport in the park across the road.

Gym and Sports Stadium
A rather well equipped gym, attached to an enormous badminton stadium, in the middle of F'n nowhere. Don't question the logic, just go. They have weights, running machines, exercise bikes, and other equipment, as well as change rooms, showers, and lockers. The gym costs 200yen for as long as you can handle.

Super delicious authentic Korean restaurant (not Korean BBQ) and Kimchi specialists.
Open 11:30-4:00 Monday to Saturday.
Will open for dinner from 6:00-9:00 on Friday or Saturday if you book. Also opens on weeknights for 10 or more people.
You'll need to drive to get there, but it's WELL worth the effort. Find someone with a car, drive up with them, make a party of it.

Kogaku no michi Hiking trail
An old path around the mountain once used by Nakaoka Shintaro to get to and from school. It's a nice, easy hike with good views of Kitagawa, although there is an unfortunate bare patch of forest half way through. The path starts near an abandoned Shinto shrine which is also worth exploring.

A friendly little cafe attached to the cinema. It's run by a local who writes and performs songs about local villages, towns, famous products, and train lines. He's a champion, and he might even play a song or two for you if you ask him.

Niyodo Kawa River Mouth Surf Break

Haruno Harvest
A bakery/cafe. The bread is better than average (and there is a members' discount of 30%), while the cafe serves delicious Italian and Asian meals. Unfortunately only open until 7pm.

The Otsuka Museum of Art

Drink Space TRIP
Awesome little bar that is DIRECTLY behind McDonald's going away from Obiyamachi. Tends to open a little later, usually 10 or 11. Very small, but the drinks and the bartender make it worth it. He personally goes to ice makers and green growers to pick out the ice and fruit/mixers for his drinks. You can really TASTE the difference. Also makes out of this world specialty drinks.

Hokokuji Temple and Rock Garden
Home of a very well known rock garden made in the Muromachi period (1336 to 1573), making it one of the oldest gardens on Shikoku. Just as the man living there to show you the garden!

Great little bar with a good selection of drinks. Nomihodai parties can be arranged, with delicious and sometimes vegetarian friendly food. Occasional Live music. Very friendly owner. On the second floor.

Brewery has an interesting free tour (1 hr.) talking about the history and preparation of Asahi Beer. Tour is concluded with a tasting area, offering 3 different beers (Super Dry, and two seasonal styles) in large glasses, also free!

Yes, that many "a's in the name. Not enough to express the deliciousness of the Chinese cuisine that awaits you in this tiny little restaurant. Not open very late, but worth it.

A spacious roadside family restaurant with a nice unique flare near the border of Hidaka and Sakawa. They have table seating as well as tatami and can accommodate large parties.
