Internationally recognized coastal observatory that records changing waves, winds, tides and currents. Established in 1977 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Field Data Collection and Analysis Branch, the FRF features an 1840-ft pier and specialized data gathering equipment. Visitors can meet the staff, take a virtual tour of the facility, learn about the research conducted, access data, graphs and reports and climb the tower

Part of the N.C. Coastal Reserve System, most of the 1,800+ acres were acquired by The Nature Conservancy from the Resolution Trust Corporation in the early 1990s on behalf of the N.C. Division of Coastal Management.
A maritime deciduous forest runs along the coastline and low, gently rolling dune ridges interspersed with wet swales run parallel to the shoreline. The protected portion of the area is mostly undisturbed maritime forest with southern red oak, water oak, willow oak and beech trees. The wetland swale area is a maritime swamp forest featuring sweet gum, black gum and bald cypress. Both forest communities are rare.
The area is great for birding during the breeding season and fall migration. Many species of birds make their home in Kitty hawk Woods, including Swainson's warbler, Acadian flycatcher, white-eyed vireo, gray catbird and pileated woodpecker.
Hiking Trails: A two-mile long hiking trail is located at the end of Birch Lane, off of Treasure Street. The trail winds through 460+ acres. A series of hiking trails is located near the intersection of Amadas Road and Colleton Road.
Boat Access: Two boat access areas are located in the reserve. High Bridge Creek winds through the reserve and is accessible by kayak, canoe, and small boat. A public boat ramp is located on Bob Perry Road.

Located at Milepost 1 in Kitty Hawk, and operated by The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, the center provides information on attractions, events and directions. The center also offers an accommodations reservation center, rest rooms, public phones, and picnic area. Rest areas are open 365 days a year; welcome center is open 363 (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas), from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Full-scale reproductions of the 1902 glider and the 1903 flying machine are on display in the Wright Brothers Visitor Center. Museum, exhibits, movies and educational programs can be found in the Centennial Pavilion.
Visitors can stand in the spot where the first flights were made and climb Big Kill Devil Hill for a fabulous view of both the Sound and the Ocean.

Activites include: Hiking, hang gliding, kite flying and sunset watching over Roanoke Sound. The park features a picnic area, museum and auditorium.
