Robin Hood's Race
Rt 17 and 220
Old Union Rd.
Washington, ME, US
Contact Person: Carol Sloane

My labyrinth is made in the pattern called Robin Hood’s Race. It is about 1/2 mile long and takes 30 to 45 minutes to walk. You park at the edge of a hayfield and walk a mowed path to an island of trees to begin. The experience of walking in the woods and then out into the hayfield following the path gives a real experience of nature, from shade to sun, from quiet to breeze.

To get to this labyrinth, find the center of Washington Maine (the intersection of rts 17 and 220) At the monument, go East on Old Union Road for 1.9 miles and there will be a hayfield on the right just past a pond also on the right. There are flags to show where to park and where to walk. The labyrinth is open year round, although it is hard to maintain in winter and mud season. It is only open Sundays in hunting season.

The Labyrinth at Crystal Springs is carved into the hillside and nestled within the tall pines. The design was based on the 7 circuit classical, however, the land has lent to its emergence, a design of its own. The pathway or stepping stones are slices of trees. The Labyrinth at Crystal Springs is available during scheduled labyrinth walks and workshops or by appointment/pre-scheduled only. The labyrinth foot trails and pathways are uneven surfaces and require sure-footedness. Alternative accommodations will be made for individuals unable to navigate foot trails safely.

The Crystal Labyrinth. I built this Labyrinth in 2000. It is surrounded and centered with Herkimer diamonds (crystals). It is an outdoor 11 circuit labyrinth covering a full acre of land and made of Earth and flowers with a 3 ft wide path to a center large enough to have a gazebo made of poles and a recycled 10 ft satellite dish. Since the center is 45 ft in diameter I am making benchs that will honor each life form, I have started with the 6th (the unknown) I am calling it “Cosmic” and doing carvings of the Universe such as my version of a Supernova, the Earth and moon, comets, spirals etc.

"The Phoenix House Labyrinth was built over a period of years as a meditative walking tool. The arcs and turns were first marked with twigs, ribbons and switches. Standing before the entrance before walking into the center, each walker would lift a rock from a pile provided and carry it into the labyrinth for placement. it has now been further decorated with statues and crystals. Feelings of profound peace have been reported by many walking its path."

http://www.letterboxing.org/BoxView.php?boxnum=20830&boxname=Labyrinth_Letterbox
Directions to the Pottle Tree Farm: The tree farm is located at 507 Southmeadow Road in Perry, Maine. From Route 1 North take the left hand turn just before the Perry Farmers Union store. This is Southmeadow Road. The tree farm is 2 1/2 miles from this turn. Where the road splits take the left turn, Southmeadow Road. Look for the tree farm signs on your right. Park anywhere where you are not blocking the driveway to the house or barn.

Clues: 1. Start at the medicine wheel located just to the right of the house. 2. The labyrinth trail starts on the opposite side of the driveway from the medicine wheel. 3. The trail winds to the left side of the barn past an old apple orchard. 4. The Labyrinth itself will be on your right a short distance from the orchard. NOTE: Please take the time to walk the labyrinth and meditate. Jim Pottle once described the labyrinth as "the pathway to inner peace." 5. At the center of the labyrinth, with your back to the entrance, look for a large stump and two cedar trees at approximately 10 o'clock. 6. There will be a low stone wall behind the stump and in front of the two cedar trees. 7. Look for the letterbox in the stone wall in front of the cairn.

Labyrinth winds into Eagle Scout project
The Andover Townsman

Boy Scout Raymond Gorzela of Troop 77 in Andover wanted to do something different for his Eagle Scout project.

After watching many fellow Scouts complete bridges as their service project, he opted to construct a meditative labyrinth for St. Paul’s Church at 390 Main St. in North Andover instead.

The meditative labyrinth, which is open to the public, offers a fluid path for people to walk along as they ponder and reflect.

Gorzela selected a seven-circuit design that’s 32 feet in diameter, with the labyrinth encompassing 800 square feet.

The project required 460, 12-inch edgers, 8 yards of stone dust and 3 yards of sand to complete.

A total of 86 volunteer hours went into bringing the labyrinth to fruition.

Labyrinth in the woods behind Torrey Hall was built by volunteers in the Fall of 2005, based on a 2000 year-old design from Greece.

Flower Labyrinth was built in the Fall of 2006, by students in a class, Gardens in Our Lives, on Campus Hill on the original site of the O'Brien House. This design is based on the inner seven circuits of the 800 year-old labyrinth at Chartres, France.
