UP for Art

Welcome to the online map of the 2008 University Place Public Art Tour. This is the first of what we expect to be a series of routes to view different pieces of public art in our community. The project is a partnership between the City of University Place and UP for Art, a non-profit group dedicated to public art.

This 8-mile loop is a series of art installations selected to give visitors and residents a better idea of the reasons for public art, plus the opportunity to discover and enjoy both the art and the stories behind each piece. All but the City Hall pieces are available on weekends and after business hours.

The pieces were selected to reflect our values as a community: commitment to education, environmental stewardship, an eye for enhanced functionality, a knack for partnering and the generosity of residents and friends.

How to Use the Map: The route is marked by the blue line. You can start at any green pin but the numbers start to the north end. Please note there are four pieces in close proximity in the Homestead Park/City Hall area. The red dot designates Raindrops and Slug in Homestead Park. The green dot marks where you will find the Architect's Rendering and Quilt in City Hall. If you can’t see both dots, use the map's zoom function to make the two spots farther apart.

Each pin on the map marks the location of a piece. Clicking on that pin will open an information box with an image, details of the art and directions to that piece. Clicking on the small photo will provide a larger view.

Any part of the page can be printed. However, the best way to print directions to the sites and a map of the entire loop is to click on the car icon to the right of the blue"8 Mile Art Loop" title at the center bottom of the page.

University Place is blessed with a large amount of public art. This year’s map is just a sampling, but we hope you enjoy it and our community.

This whimsical character, which is placed where kids can climb on it, was one of the eight ideas for the 40th Street roundabout, "The Slug Race". The Friends of Homestead commissioned one of the race participants for a place within the park where it would be more accessible. It was created as a light-hearted way to celebrate nature. By viewing this typically unpleasant creature as an interactive sculpture, visitors get a different sense of nature and the environment, plus a bit of fun. The patterns painted on the slug are derived from cultures including Maori, Native American and Celtic.

Architect's Rendering

Medium: Pen and Ink

This is the University in "University Place". The original platting of the area as a community was part of a plan to site Puget Sound University as part of it. University Land Company undertook the development, but many who bought lots defaulted in the economic depression of the 1890s. Almost 600 acres of the land was sold in 1901 after it was forfeited for nonpayment of taxes and the University was eventually built elsewhere.
The rendering is in City Hall, down on the left of the main door twenty feet down the hall on the left wall.

The Quilt

Medium: Calico Fabric
Dimensions: 52in X 45in
Installed: 1999

This quilt was designed and constructed by the members of Girl Scout Troop 166 of the Pacific Girl Scout Council with help from leaders Chris Pranz and Cindy Berger. It was presented to the City of University Place to celebrate its becoming a city and was hung above the door in the current City Hall.

Bike Racks
Along Bridgeport Way you will see the Bicycle Racks at the corners and along the street between 44th and 35th.

Artist: DERO
Medium: Bent powder coated steel pipe
Dimensions: 4ft X 6ft X 3ft
Installed:2003

These bike racks are another example of functional art - this time more than once. You will see them all along Bridgeport Way in the Town Center zone. City Manager Bob Jean noticed this style bike rack in the city of Honolulu, Hawaii. After getting the vendor information from the City of Honolulu, the City of UP contracted DERO directly and ordered the bike racks thanks to generous contributions to the city's Beautification Fund.
