Green Century Institute: Green Community Network

This relatively simple Green Community Network Map is a concept demonstration for a next generation mapping interface that is being developed under the auspices of the Green Century Institute. GCI has already initiated a full software development spec of this leading edge green 'metamap' and will soon be putting it out for development to the green open source community.

The current map gives a geographical access point for navigating across the internet to the websites for various green communties around the world—with an emphasis on communities in the Green Century Institute's local bioregion, the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California. If you have information on a green community you would like to see added to the Green Community Network Map or any other ecological development projects that fits neatly within the map's current categories, please contact GCI through this site, providing project/community description and links in the body of the email.

Damanhur
damanhur website

Founded in 1977, Damanhur is an international spiritual center for research. Situated in Valchiusella Valley, in the Alpine foothills of northern Italy, Damanhur is a federation of communities with over 800 citizens, a social and political structure, a constitution, 40 economic activities, its own currency, schools, and a daily paper.
The federation now numbers over 450 full time citizens and 350 others who live nearby and take part in its activities. Damanhur offers different kinds of citizenship. It is possible to be a full-time resident or to live in other parts of the world and visit regularly.
The homes and the companies of the federation are scattered all over the Valchiusella Valley. They include approximately 200 hectares of woods, urban surface, and farmland and over 80 buildings, including private homes, studios, laboratories, and farms. Since the very first day of its foundation, Damanhur has been engaged in creating a sustainable way of life. The federation has many centers in Italy and Europe and contact with spiritual groups worldwide. Our Temple of Mankind is a great underground building carved by hand out of the rock and decorated by Damanhur's citizens.
Damanhur consists of three "bodies." The first relates to content and memory, (the School of Meditation), the second relates to innovation and planning (The Game of Life), and the third relates to practical everyday life and organization (the social environment).

Green Century Institute
San Francisco, California, United States
Based on a growing body of data, there is an urgent need to convert existing communities and develop new communities for true sustainability. In the first decades of the 21st Century, urban renovation and new town developments worldwide can realize significant short and long term benefits from green design methodologies that combine ecological architecture with sustainable construction, maintenance, energy technologies and resources. Federal and civic agencies, industry and academic research groups, developers, architects and urban designers, marketers of green products and services, urban renovation projects and experimental "intentional communities" are all interested in fostering a broader understanding and application of green design resources. These entities are in need of interaction and information-exchange to rapidly accelerate a new urban development paradigm. The Green Community Network is being developed by a circle of independent experts to fill this need, with an Internet-based information hub, a publishing and media production program, a series of exchange programs and international conferencess.

Findhorn
findhorn website

The Findhorn Foundation is the educational heart of the spiritual community founded in 1962 by Peter and Eileen Caddy and Dorothy Maclean in Morayshire, northeast Scotland.
Our work is based on the values of :
* living from our personal source of inner divine wisdom
* co-operation with the intelligence of nature
* service to the world
We have no formal creed or doctrine, and honour all the world's major religions as paths to our inner divinity. We believe humanity is engaged in an evolutionary expansion of consciousness, and we seek to develop new ways of living infused with spiritual values, in harmony with the earth and with each other.
We are a centre of spiritual education, offering people many ways to visit, live and work in a transformative community environment. Over 400 people live within or are locally connected to our community.
Our residential Experience Weeks began in 1974 and provide a powerful, often heart-opening, introduction to our spiritual principles and their application in daily life, and have been attended by over 30,000 people.
The development of our ecovillage is a continuation of our work with nature and is a tangible demonstration of the links between the environment and the social, economic and spiritual aspects of life. It is a constantly evolving model. The Findhorn Foundation is a founding member of Global Ecovillage Network and is associated with the Department of Public Information of the United Nations as a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).

Schumacher College
Totnes, Devon, United Kingdom
Schumacher College was founded in 1991 on the conviction that a new vision is needed for society, its values and its relationship to the earth. Over the last decade the College has become a centre of excellence with an international reputation for the inspiration, quality and breadth of its teaching.

In the beautiful Devon countryside, away from the pressures of everyday life, participants enjoy a mixture of learning, reflection and the exchange of ideas and experiences. Much of the unique character of the place comes from the way the College community each day creates an expression of a sustainable lifestyle. As well as immersing themselves in course material, participants share in essential activities which include cooking, housekeeping and gardening.

The College environment creates a sense of the wholeness of life and provides the context for a deep and potentially transformative learning experience. At the College people find refreshment and often, new direction. They find that they have touched a source of inspiration and are reminded that there are others who share their deepest values about life and its meaning.

Esalen Institute

Esalen—the word itself summons up tantalizing visions of adventure, of unexplored frontiers, of human possibilities yet to be realized. There is the wonder of the place itself, 120 acres of fertile land carved out between mountain and ocean, blessed by a cascading canyon stream and hot mineral springs gushing out of a seaside cliff. There is the delicate and subtle Big Sur air of a late afternoon in May, the midnight mist of July, the drenching February rain. There are October nights so clear the Milky Way can light your walk along the darkened garden path. And always there is the sound of the sea.

And then there are the people—the people who live there and love the land, and the 300,000 more who have come from all over the world to participate in Esalen's forty-year-long Olympics of the body, mind, and spirit, committing themselves not so much to "stronger, faster, higher" as to deeper, richer, more enduring.

They come for the intellectual freedom to consider systems of thought and feeling that lie beyond the current constraints of mainstream academia. They come to discover ancient wisdom in the motion of the body, poetry in the pulsing of the blood. They come to rediscover the miracle of self-aware consciousness. At best, they come away inspired by the precision of a desire to learn and keep on learning through all of life, and beyond.

Esalen is a place with a global reach. It is a place, as Thomas Wolfe said about America, where miracles not only happen but where they happen all the time.

Welcome to Esalen!!

Crystal Waters Permaculture Village
Crystal Waters has been designed from inception according to the principles of permaculture by Max Lindegger, Robert Tap, Barry Goodman and Geoff Young. A wildlife sanctuary where dogs and cats are banned and people really do try to live in harmony with nature. Eighty percent of the 640 acres are owned in common, and these are a mix of terrains: the clear waters of the Mary River, serene lakes, open grasslands, timbered hills and gullies, and increasingly, pockets of rain-forest trees planted as part of the community's passion for reforestation. The idea was that people should be able to operate from home, and many businesses operate from here, e.g., foresters; mail-order businesses--books, organic gardening supplies; carpenters; builders; electricians; permaculture course providers and consultants; nurseries; caterers; craftspeople; architects; entertainers; baker; bed-and-breakfast accommodation; furniture manufacturers;Ecovillage designer and also the base for the Oceania/Asia secretarist of the Global Ecovillage Network. Crystal Waters won an award in the 1996 World Habitat Awards and was a finalist in the 1998 Best Practices Awards. Many innovative ideas in building, wastewater, water, agriculture, and nature conservation are evident. The model has proved attractive to the relatively mainstream as well as an alternative market.Crystal Waters is the home of the Award winning Eco Center. About 240 live now in the village. A short video is available from the GEN Oceania/Asia office.( see www.ecologicalsolutions.com.au )

Ananda Village
Nevada City, California, United States
The Ananda Community is dedicated to the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda, author of the spiritual classic _Autobiography of a Yogi._ Yogananda spoke of the need for a direct experience of God. Meditation, he said, is the missing ingredient in most religions. By sharing with countless Americans these life-transforming techniques of yoga and meditation, he opened the door to their own direct experience of the spiritual realities. Ananda exists as a community of people dedicated to helping each other achieve this purpose.
Founded in 1968 by a small group inspired and guided by Yogananda's direct disciple, Kriyananda (J. Donald Walters), Ananda today is one of the largest intentional spiritual communities in the world. The main community, Ananda Village, is located near Nevada City, California, and for the last 30 years has been a living laboratory for the integration of Spirit into all aspects of life. Here 300 people apply the teachings of yoga creatively to marriage, child raising, leadership, business, healing, education, the arts, and recreation. The practice of meditation forms the heart of community life, together with a spirit of service to others.
Ananda operates on the free-enterprise system with a focus on cooperation. Members currently run many thriving businesses, including Nevada County's largest natural-foods market and vegetarian restaurant. Ananda Village is also home of the Expanding Light, a yoga education and retreat facility; the Education for Life Foundation, which provides training on Ananda's educational system and runs a private girls' high school; and the Ananda School, with over 50 students in grades K---9.
Each member pays monthly dues toward community maintenance and schools. Individuals are responsible for their own housing.
Ananda branch communities and teaching centers are to be found in Sacramento; Palo Alto; Portland; Seattle; Australia; and Assisi, Italy.
Many retreats, work-study, and internship programs are available year-round to support people in learning about yoga, education, and the dynamics of community living. Please visit our Web site at http://www.ananda.org.

Eleusis Project
Vision statement

We are a community dedicated to thriving in life through the integration of traditional wisdom and innovative practices. Our values are centered around outreach, education, and the growth of body, mind and spirit. We nurture the mysteries of life through creativity rooted in the context of ecological, social and spiritual evolution.

Inspiration

Eleusis was the site of the Eleusinian mysteries, the secret initiation ritual that was celebrated regularly for over two thousand years until the fourth century A.D.

The Eleusis Project has as its mission the reempowerment of ritual and the rediscovery of ancient techniques for living in harmony with the Earth.

Goals

To provide a space for spiritual retreat, vision quests, a healing center, and wilderness sanctuary.

To foster interdisciplinary research and development in such fields as human potential, consciousness, clean energy technologies, and sustainable futures.

To disseminate this research to the public through the Internet, film and new media projects, festivals, fairs and performances.

To design architectual systems that are aesthetically exquisite, energy-efficient, and environmentally sound.

To provide fertile ground for cross-disciplinary and exploratory work in visual, musical, new media and experiential art.

To offer artists, musicians, writers and performers a setting of great natural beauty where they can generate new work and stage events.

Community

Imagine living in a beautiful nature preserve with like-minded friends. Instead of fighting traffic and spending 10 hours in front of a computer screen, you could spend a few hours working on a computer project, a few hours planting trees, a few hours in celebration playing, dancing or appreciating music. This weekend a circus might perform, or there may be a play, conference, fair or ritual.

We wish to create an oasis of peace, harmony and healing for those who need it, living as we do in an increasingly challenging world. This community will be a link in a chain of such communities all around the world.

The Bay Area is at the forefront of creativity and technology. Despite that, the alternative community of cultural creatives have almost no place to gather. There is a notable lack of affordable space in northern California for festivals, dance celebrations and performances. The artists, computer and multimedia wizards, event producers, musicians, and performers on the cutting-edge of technology and awareness need an incubator where they can develop new work and exchange ideas across cultures and professional disciplines.

Every year, a group of artists and urban planners move to the deserted playa of Nevada and create the festival called Burning Man. In only 6 months they are able to build Black Rock City completely from scratch: a thriving community with a newspaper, radio station, a café and over 20,000 citizens. People dedicate enormous amounts of time and money to build this temporary installation. Many of these talented builders want to create something new -- a green and sustainable city.

Los Angeles Eco-Village
Bimini Place
Los Angeles, California, United States
la ecovillage site

The Los Angeles Eco-Village (LAEV) was founded in 1993 in the two-block neighborhood of Bimini and White House Place in the intensely urban Wilshire Center/Koreatown area of Los Angeles. Started as a project of the nonprofit Cooperative Resources & Services Project (CRSP)after the 1992 civil uprisings, our purpose is to demonstrate the processes of becoming a healthy and sustainable neighborhood socially, ecologically and economically. The start-up of LAEV was the culmination of a 10-year planning process for a new-construction ecovillage seven miles away from the current location. The uprisings were a wake-up call for LAEV planners: we decided to heal our already existing built-out older neighborhood! We felt this was essential if there was to be any significant quality of life in the future of urban dwellers. We were also on a mission to influence city dwellers everywhere to establish more cooperative and ecologically sensitive living patterns.
We are still working toward a common vision among the very diverse intentional and preexisting neighbors who live here. Overall, the founding vision included demonstrating lower-impact and higher-quality living patterns among newly arriving Eco-Villagers and pre-existing neighbors drawn to that vision.
Those interested in becoming members are requested to demonstrate their commitment to more ecological and cooperative living patterns. We try to balance our diversity in the following areas: income, ethnicity, generations, gender, and household composition.
There are about a dozen proactive Eco-Villagers within the current 35 person intentional community. There are approximately 500 residents in the two-block neighborhood. The vision for some of us is that someday all or most who live in the two blocks will manifest Eco-Village values. Some neighbors who are not participating, nonetheless, appreciate the work that has been done to make the neighborhood a safer, more friendly place.
Over the past decade, CRSP has purchased two apartment buildings (48 units of housing, including two common units) which we are slowly eco-retrofitting. The intentional community is now organizing to create a community land trust and a limited equity housing co-op designed to keep the buildings (and other properties close by)permanently affordable for low to middle income households.

Christiana
Christiania is an autonomous community that started 33 years ago following the civil occupation of an unused area, then owned by the Ministry of Defence.
It is an unparalleled example of human entrepreneurship and innovative spirit.
Art
Christiania has been described as a life surrounded by art. There is art everywhere. Many of the houses, which have been built by the present or previous inhabitants and which nobody owns, are works of art in themselves, and are often studied and admired by students from the nearby School of Architecture. Everywhere you go in Christiania there are paintings and sculptures, and there is always live music or theatre playing somewhere. Christiania has several of its own art galleries.

A social and healthy life
Christianites have the opportunity to live a socially active and responsible existence as they have a high level of influence on their everyday lives. Diversity of opinions and attitudes among your peers is encouraged. Consensus democracy, despite the lengthy negotiations that are needed to reach common consent, provides unity and realistic solutions. A strong social network is a well-developed part of the community. This leads to an improved quality of life and a safety-net for the inhabitants. From an early age the children of Christiania roam freely within the area. We all know each other’s children and where they live. The elderly and infirm are also taken care of by neighbours and the Citizens Council. Today, Christiania has four day-care institutions, which are paid for by the entire community.

Social networking
Neighbourliness is of vital importance for the life of Christiania. Most of the 800 inhabitants know each other and help with everything from house construction to talking confidentially. Christiania also attracts a large number of people from the surrounding city who do not feel comfortable in modern society. They are well accepted, and are often integrated to the extent that they can provide small-scale services for Christiania. This gives them a meaningful existence and the satisfaction of fulfilling a role in a larger context.

The story of Christiania
The story of Christiania is colourful, long, and filled with battles, victories and defeats. Many of the people who began the experiment do not live here anymore, but the dream of a life of freedom and the idea of a place ruled by its inhabitants endures. Now 33 years on, people from near and far still feel attracted to the magical mixture of anarchy and love of this community. It all began in 1970 when a group of citizens knocked down the fence around an extensive area previously used by the Ministry of Defence. They wanted a playground for their kids and something green to look at. The same year an article in an alternative newspaper was published in connection with an art exhibition. The article discussed the abandoned military area and suggested that it be used for the numerous young people who were unable to find accommodation elsewhere. The article resulted in the massive immigration of people from all sections of society, who came to create an alternative life based on communal living and freedom. This was the birth of Christiania.
