The Lighthouse has stood guardian over Mobile Bay for over one hundred and thirty years.It is a beautiful and majestic structure towering over the Gulf of Mexico. Sand Island Lighthouse is located 3 miles south of Dauphin Island, in the Gulf of Mexico. It was constructed by the renowned lighthouse builder Winslow Lewis in 1873.

Constructed in 1821, Historic Fort Gaines is located on the East End of the Island on Mobile Bay. It was one of the primary Confederate forts guarding the entrance to the bay. Admiral Farragut ("Damn the torpedoes. Full speed ahead!") ran his fleet past the forts in the Battle of Mobile Bay, August 5, 1864. The entire battle campaign lasted from August 2 to August 23, 1864.

The Estuarium is an exciting educational facility highlighting the four key habitats of coastal Alabama: the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta, Mobile Bay, the Barrier Islands and the Gulf of Mexico. It includes the 10,000 square foot Exhibit Hall and Living Marsh Boardwalk. This facility is a showcase of the plants, animals, and other natural resources found in the Estuary and its surrounding marine habitats. Wild Bird Magazine recently selected Dauphin Island as one of the top four locations in North America for viewing spring bird migrations! It has also been sited as one of the ten most globally important sites for bird migrations. The Sanctuary consists of 164 acres of maritime forest, marshes, and dunes, including a lake, a swamp and a beach. It is located at the Eastern end of Dauphin Island, a 14 mile-long barrier island situated off the Alabama Gulf coast. The Sanctuary is of vital importance because it is the largest segment of protected forest on the island

Giant moss-draped live oaks, such as this specimen, are abundant throughout the Park. The tree pictured above is estimated by botanists to be approximately 800 years old, and was a mature oak when the Spaniards first visited the shores of Dauphin Island in 1519. A self-guided tour through Shell Mound Park should be included in any visit to the area.

Before Mobile was founded, or New Orleans even a place on a map, Dauphin Island was the center of French colonization in the Southern United States. Explored and mapped by the Spanish as early as 1519, it was 1699 when the French established their permanent colony here. This was the home site of M. de La Mothe de Cadillac, second governor of the Louisiana Territory, who moved to Dauphin Island in 1713. The park is equipped with picnic tables and public restroom facilities.

This is a very small, pedestrian-access only road side park located between the ferry landing and Historic Fort Gaines. Originally designed to give walk-on visitors from the ferry a shaded spot to picnic and cool-off, it has also become very popular with those using the Island long Bike path. Besides picnic tables and benches, a porch swing hanging from a large magnolia limb is also provided.

The airport offers 3,000 feet of hard surfaced, lighted runway that will accommodate single engine and light twin engine aircraft. To assist pilots in flying the proper approach angle, there are precision approach path indicator (PAPI) lights for each runway. Both the runway lights and the PAPI can be turned on and off by keying an aircraft radio the Airports Unicom Frequency (122.8 kHz). The salt marshes around the airport are popular areas for observing many different types of shorebirds.
