Converting the vacant car parking space into a virtual green space. Reverse Park is an ironic exercise in environmental and social commentary.

Its not a park, but what if it was? Would its shade and soft grass offer a place to sit? Would it encourage pedestrian traffic, boosting local economy? In turn, would it decrease the use of automobiles, in which case what effect would it have on our environment?

Party for One is a non- verbal contemporary performance work that explores ideas of isolation, celebration and the marking of time, through the surreal and simultaneous individual experiences of three people who each throw a party, with themselves as the only guest. Blurring the line between theatre and performance art, Party for One provides a live internal, external and voyeuristic experience.

The Avid park is going to be a fun animated park complete with stellar performances to come from Party 4 One with associated readings of poetry, text, etc. The arvo/evening will then see some stall holders from the regular last Friday of the month - Little Market @ Avid making a special appearance out the front.

In this response to PARK(ing) we envisage an underground metro station network which services an area up to a radius of 3km from the centre of the city. The stairway indicated in our PARK(ing) space, represents one of several access points to a station under Centenary Place midway between Central and Brunswick St main line stations to which it is connected on two separate lines. It is envisaged that the trains continue on the Metro network on their continuous circular routes and pass every station at 5 minutes internals during the day and at 10 minute intervals after midnight.

"Moments in a car park" -
The city, in many ways, can be seen to be more of transition space than a space which people choose to occupy and experience. Many people drive through the city on their way to another place, or walk through on their way to work, rarely stopping to simply occupy the space and indulge in the city landscape.

As such we chose to create a space where people can stop and reflect on their surroundings, a space to be occupied as opposed to moved through. A place where people can choose to occupy it as they will, but where they are still a part of the surrounding landscape.

"Expanding our Horizons"reflects our identification with the current developing problem that cars and its parking iccur. Such as suburban sprawl, pollution, wasting space and so on. The site model gives an representative view on an idea that can solve this crisis in future; that is, duplicating the planes, to create more space and to replace the grass (or other nature elements) that were destroyed in creating functional needs.

"The H.O.B"
The park is about being balanced, hybrid and open. This is our vision for what we want the city to be about. We don't want to get rid of private transport and make the city completely green but have a balance between green space and industrial space and this has been expressed through our design.

Our project consists of three levels. The first representing the main arteries of travel in which the city should have a balance of public and private transport. The second level represents green space throughout our cities, which concentrates more on an experience for pedestrians and bike riders. The Third level represents an emphasis on architectural built form, which will complement the green spaces and bring it together as a whole.

"State of Emergency: The Human Touch Lost"
Our group’s view is that our urban cities have been dominated by the car as buildings and public spaces are limited to make way for roads for vehicles. Within the confines of the car, humans have lost the utilisation of our primary senses to feel the urban spaces we inhabit and move through. We feel that there really is a “State of Emergency”: not only have humans lost the ability to navigate through our cities by our senses without the interference of the car, the cities themselves are cold landscapes designed for the car – the human touch is lost.

Our PARK, on Site 4, represents barricading out the rigidity of the vehicular system and moving towards a better future where spaces are less rigid and are more welcoming to the human and the human touch. The use of sandbags with different materials within them not only evoke the idea of the state of emergency we are currently in, but also invite occupants of the space to touch the built environment as the space moves from the carpark to nature beyond.

PARK 6
Pyungwon, Peter, Laisiasa, Daniel
9am - 3pm

The PARK title, "Coup d' Car", describes the key concepts involved in this project. It is simply a play on words of the phrase "Coup d’état" which defines the sudden overthrow of a government, usually by the military. Linguistically, "Coup d’état" is French for “a strike to the state” or coup [blow], d’ [to the] état, [state]. So by replacing état with car, the project describes the overthrow of the car as a dominant power over our lives.

Although the car appears to be helpful, much like a healthy government, to the educated eye it is corrupt. It has imparted so many restrictions onto our lives that we overlook as citizens of its control. The car has done this by claiming so much territory for parking and roads and by shaping our vast cities. But more importantly, it has forced us to neglect the simple things we can admire when we are not influenced by the speed and frames of view it provides when we are behind the steering wheel and windscreen.

So infact, we are not in control of the car as we may believe; it is in control of us. Knowing this, the PARK intends to perform a "Coup d' Car", not only by taking back the territory that was originally ours, but by taking back the experience, the time and the views it has stolen, by means of architectural elements.

"100:1"
As university students studying architecture we are constantly made aware of the environment and the impact that the modern built environment has and will have on it. It is therefore our aim, through the use of recycled materials, to draw attention to nature by magnifying it to a scale where it can't be ignored. In doing so we will be transforming this small pedestrian unfrendly piece of land into a useable architectural space for the public.

"Parked In"
The theme aims to explore how cars interact with the city and the spatial arrangement of the city.

The parking spot will accommodate 5 or 6 2 mt tall petitions that are progressive in nature. Thats right - they evolve over the alloted time frame. The parking spot reaches it's full potential at 2 pm when the groups statement about cars/space and the city is realised. The spot is interactive with people being encouraged to pass through it.

8:00am - 4:00pm

"Revolving Trends"
Our group sees the place of the car in the modern city as an intrusion to what could be. Short of radically removing the car from the city, our group's manifesto recognizes that a change has to be made, and that the first step is to rearrange the values of the city. This includes putting the car lower in the heirachy, and things like social interaction and green space at the top.

"Urban environment"
Our PARK will consist of a sculptural tower which makes a statement about ideas related to the use of Multi-story car-parks in our city and the way green space is positioned within this environment. The sculpture seeks to express our ideas of transforming the function of the urban multi-story car-park so that it houses areas of vertically stacked green space. The public will be encouraged to inhabit the space whereby they briefly engage in the experience, taking away with them a piece of the sculpture they have removed. This piece or small box that the participant removes will be posted with images conveying our ideas or stance against multi-story car-parking in the city. Within the small boxes will be soil and some seedlings from which flowers can grow (a take away mini planter box). This is meant to be a take-home reminder of our ideas about vertically stacked green-space. Finally, as the take-home boxes are removed, the sculptural form changes to reveal a tree lit from within the structure.

"Block Park-ing"
Using recycleable material (milk crates), a structure was designed for site 14 with various heights and spaces to mimic the city building in a slight way. The concept or the idea trying to be put forward is that a car park space (approx 6m x 2.4m) is actually fairly large when it's occupied by people, we just don't realise this when a car takes up this space. Which also brings us to the question of what is "space" to people? How do they perceive their space? What would they do in their space? and what do they want their space to look like or arranged?

We have come up with using the simple geometric form of milk crates (cubes) to build (tied together by zip ties and covered) an un-restricted form (although some will be tied together so they cannot be moved or climbed on for safety reasons), with coloured coded cubes that can be stacked and removed, so that the people who come in can think about what kind of space they would like by moving the crates to create their own spaces and do what they like in that space. Whether its reading, resting, coffee break-ing, catching up, its something to experience and can only be enjoyed by themselves, without someone directing what their space has to look and feel like.
