North Light
This is one of Block Island's two historic, and operating, lighthouses.
Old Harbor
Block Island's "downtown," where the ferries (except the Montauk boat) land. One of BI's two first-run movie theaters -- the historic Empire Theater -- is here. Next door to the Empire, a MUST-VISIT: Photographer Malcom Greenaway's gallery.
Scotch Beach
The entire island is just a little over 100 yard wide at this point. GREAT family beach, convenient to boaters who anchor in The Great Salt Pond. Just across Corn Neck Road from "The Dinghy Beach" (shown on some maps as "Mosquito Beach"). WARNING: Observe No Parking signs on Scotch Beach Road...AND the 25MPH speed limit. NSPD checks the lot often, and is often uses radar along this long straight stretch of Corn Neck Road.
Old Coast Guard station at inlet to Great Salt Pond
Champlin's Road (referred to on some maps as "Old Coast Guard Road") is a Block Island perspective that 99% of visitors never enjoy. DON'T try this in a Mini-Cooper. High-ground-clearance vehicles highly recommended. Drive all the way out to the old Coast Guard station, then hike a short path to the inlet to the Great Salt Pond.
Southeast Light
Dedicated by President Ulysses S. Grant, visited by President Bill Clinton, and -- in between -- MOVED, so it wouldn't tumble over the 200 foot bluffs, and into the ocean below.
Transfer Station
NOT "the dump." Bring your trash here. Off Corn Neck Road.
Mohegan Bluffs
INTENSE scenery. Pacific Coast Highway quality. When it's clear, you see Montauk Point, at the tip of Long Island, 12 miles away. And take the REAL Stairmaster to the beach below. Rumor has it that --- if you head to the right down below -- you might find discarded swimwear.
Block Island State Airport
Fred Benson Town Beach
The 7-mile stretch of beach along the East coast of Block Island is collectively referred to on most maps as "Crescent Beach." This is the only section with facilities (lifeguard, rest rooms, showers, refreshments).
Rodman's Hollow Nature Preserve
GREAT hike (two versions, short and long).
Paine's Dock
Marina and Mahogany Shoals Bar; near Narragansett Inn and Smuggler's Cove restaurant
Block Island Boat Basin
Marina; auto/moped/bike rentals. Launch service to boats in The Great Salt Pond. The Oar restaurant makes THE BEST Mudslides on Block Island, on the deck bar.
Champlin's Marina
Here's where the Montauk Ferry lands. One of Block Island's two first-run movie theaters, The Oceanwest, is here.
RUMORED clothing-optional beach.
Police and Fire station
BE HERE, right after the 4th of July parade, for a GREAT, all-you-can-eat steak fry, a fund-raiser for the Volunteer Fire Department. COME HUNGRY.
Gas station
Behind G.R. Sharkey's Restaurant, across from Yellow Kittens
Block Island Grocery, Washington Trust Bank
Washington Trust is the only bank on Block Island. There's an ATM in the foyer...and EXTREMELY cute tellers inside.
