Stateline towns
These stateline town names are
portmanteus - in other words, these toponyms were created by combining letters or syllables from the names of the adjoining states. On this map, "Town pair" means two towns with the same name that form a single community straddling a state line (such as Texhoma OK/TX). "Tri-state" means a town named for three states (like Kenova WV), and "Bi-state" means a town named for two states (like Kanorado KS). The "Special" category is for unique or noteworthy examples. The "Dubious" category contains locales that were not georeferenced in this mapping application, so their locations may be incorrect, and it's unlikely these names are still in local usage anyway. This is a cartographic supplement for
my webpage dealing with the topic.
Texarkana, LA/TX
Not only is this a town pair, but it's also named for three states: apparently the person who named it believed it was located at the tri-state corner of TEXas, ARKansas, and LouisiANA.
Cal Nev Ari, NV
Named for CALifornia, NEVada, and ARIzona.
Penowa, PA
I'm guessing this represents PENnsylvania, Ohio, and West VirginiA.
Okeana, OH
Ohio, KEntucky, and IndiANA
Kentenia, KY
KENtucky, TENnessee, and VirginIA
Kenova, WV
KENtucky, Ohio, and West VirginiA
Arkinda, AR
Presumably for ARKansas and INDian Territory (as Oklahoma was once known)
Arkola, AR
Maybe "Arkokla" would've been a little tricky to pronounce?
Calexico, CA
Named for a state and a country.
Delmarva
Not a town, but a peninsula encompassing portions of DELaware, MARyland, and VirginiA. This marker is placed where US 13 crosses the MD/VA border.
Mexicali, Mexico
Named for a state and a country.
Texola, OK
Maybe "Texokla" would've been a little tricky to pronounce?
Vir-Mar Beach, VA
Despite the fact that Maryland's mainland is a few miles across the Potomac River, this community is nevertheless technically right on the state line, because as soon as you step into the water from this part of Virginia's shoreline, you've entered the jurisdiction of Maryland.
Lake Koocanusa, BC/MT
Lake is an impoundment of the KOOtenai River, straddling the border between CANada and the USA.
