Fargo Theatre
314 Broadway N
Fargo, ND, United States

This beautiful theater originally opened in 1926. It first played Charlie's Aunt with Syd Chaplin. Tom Mix and his Wonder Horse Tony appeared on stage here as well.
For years it has been home to a twice annual silent movie night, in which classics like the "Phantom of the Opera", "Ella Cinders", "The Thief of Bagdad", and "The General" are accompanied by an original live score on the Fargo's mighty wurlitzer pipe organ.
Four Star Theatre
2200 Clement St
San Francisco, CA, United States
(415) 666-3488
The former La Bonita Theatre has been close to closing many times since its birth in 1912. Although any of its architectural character was long clapboarded over, the theatre has retained a simple Moderne marquee and vertical sign. Chinese characters have also been painted on the facade.
The theater was the site of an eleven month run of "La Cage aux Folles" in 1979. Now twinned and showing mostly arthouse and foreign films, the 4-Star continues to struggle, but it is a survivor.

A yummy pizzeria AND a cozy movie theater? Two Boots definitely does the East Village proud. While the theater is best known for reviving Hollywood classics and hosting film festivals and public screenings, film fans gab about the sci-fi, horror, and thriller flicks featured on “Bizarro Mondays.” Make sure to check out their calendar – directors, producers, and writers often stop by to discuss their work.
Eveningstar Cinema
149 Maine St
Brunswick, ME 04011, United States
This is a must visit if you are in Brunswick, ME! It is a small homey theater and has seating comprised of a combination of couches, rocking chairs, and regular theater seats. Getting in the front row in a couch is a goal when going to this theater. The tickets are much cheaper than regular theaters and the movies range from blockbusters to sundance film fest winners. I last saw Atonement at this theater with a few girlfriends and it felt like I was watching it cozied up at home, but with the big theater screen and audio. There is a full range of candy, popcorn and refreshments in case anyone was worried.

The theatre was built in the 1890s as a livery which serviced the nearby train station. In 1911 Frank Lee and partners converted the livery into a film theatre which at that time was one of three in the town of Three Oaks.

From then until the early 1980s the theatre changed hands many times until finally closing. This is possibly the most beautiful theater in the Twin Cities area. It also claims to be the longest operating. It was founded in 1926. Before the show their organist comes out on the old WCCO Wurlitzer organ. It might be worth it to go just for the organ playing, but the movies are good too.

Founded by Robert Redford. Not quite all that it was orginally cracked up to be, but still a great place. In Madison's upscale Hilldale shopping mall. Contains a Peet's coffee shop (which is pretty excellent), a bar & a restaurant (which are OK, but don't coordinate that well with the movie showing times). On its several screens, usually shows a mix of commercial & arthouse flicks, plus several that fall in-between (e.g., "The Wrestler," "The Reader.") Can order specific seat locations when you buy your ticket.

Silent Movie Theater
611 N Fairfax Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90036, United States
The folks behind Cinefamily understand key terms such as "independent," "cult classic," and "B movie"--and if you're a midnight movie film geek like me you will appreciate this place, because there is nowhere that matches it. Many excellent series of films: for instance, going on right now, "Postpunk Junk" and in the past, "Lesbian Vampires" and "Disturbing and Inappropriate Children's Cartoons" (from as far back as the 1930s!). This is great stuff and the selections are well-researched--these folks have done their homework in the archives. I never get there early enough to snag one of the couches in the first few rows, but in any case, there are nice, comfy pillows on every seat. So, you'd think this would be one of those crusty places, right? Wrong. The place is actually quite clean. At the first "Postpunk Junk" screening the other week (_The Punk Rock Movie_ and _Blank Generation_ were screening that night), they handed out free beer (in cans, of course!) to everyone who was of age (I'm not sure anyone underage would fully appreciate that night's selection, in my opinion). There's also an outside patio where you can stretch your legs between films (or depending on the screening, get more free beer). Does it get any better?

Riverview Theatre

Minneapolis, MN 55406, United States
A single-screen comfort from the 1950's, the Riverview embodies the neighborhood theater. The Riverview shows second-run wide releases and indie pics at a truly affordable price ($2-3 as of 5/09), as well as the occasional special engagement, concert film, or video game tournament, and is the home of the screenings for the local 48-hour film festival. the drexel group used to have a half-dozen theaters under their umbrella in the columbus area, some of which have closed (the drexel north in clintonville, and the drexel grandview), and some of which have changed ownership and remained open, (landmark gateway, arena grand). The last remaining theater with the drexel name is still a great source of art house and foreign flix, but some of its luster has gone.

Harvard Exit, The
807 E Roy St
Seattle, WA 98102, United States
2 Screens: one BIG one smaller. Built in 1925. Operated by Landmark Theatres since 1979. The Harvard Exit Theatre offers Seattle's finest in independent film and foreign language cinema in a cozy atmosphere evocative of the 1920s. Annually, the Harvard Exit is host to the Seattle International Film Festival and the Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. The theatre is located on a quaint, tree-lined street at the north end of Broadway, at Harvard and Roy on Seattle's Capitol Hill. The building in which The Harvard Exit currently resides was originally constructed as a clubhouse for The Woman's Century Club in 1925. The club continues to hold meetings in the lobby, although the building was sold in 1968 for conversion to a movie theatre. In the 1980s, a second auditorium was added in an unused ballroom space on the third floor of the building. One of the very first "art" theatres in Seattle, the Harvard Exit set the standard for the exhibition of independent film and foreign language cinema. Its large and glorious lobby retains a 1920s atmosphere, adorned with a fireplace, a grand piano and chandelier. A recent remodel adds a fully wheelchair accessible restroom on the main floor, expanded concession stand and an inside box office for those rainy Seattle nights.

A collective affiliated with the University of Wisconsin, the Cinematheque holds screenings on one or two weekend nights during the academic year, usually organized around some type of theme. The screening room doubles as a classroom for larger classes of the UW's communication arts department; it is moderately comfortable; it can be hard to find if you haven't been there before. The Palace Theatre fits in very well to gorgeous Market Street in Corning, NY. This area is full of restored turn-of-the-century buildings, unique eateries, fun boutiques, and lots of space to walk and enjoy the atmosphere. The Palace shows many recently released movies but what makes them special (besides the great local artwork in the lobby and the wonderful people who work there) is that they often show artistic and independent films that aren't shown anywhere else in the region. Definitely worth a visit!
Sayre Theater
205 S Elmer Ave
Sayre, PA, United States
The Sayre Theatre not only has amazing prices (friend of ours were amazed that they could get two movie tickets, two large popcorns and two drinks for under $20!), but is one of the most beautiful theatres I've been in. The interior is absolutely breathtaking! The building was originally the Sayre Opera House, which opened in 1913. The building is right next to a darling little park and is in a wonderful community. We love going there for movie night!
Glen Theatre, The
112 N Franklin St
Watkins Glen, NY 14891, United States
The Glen Theatre is a pretty plain-looking building from the outside. The inside isn't particularly grand, but it's comfortable and roomy. What's wonderful about this theatre is the prices! They are incredibly low, even for a weekend evening show, and the movies they run are the same as the ones showing at the multiplex (for a MUCH higher ticket price). The location of The Glen Theatre (right on the main drag in Watkins
Glen) is awesome as well--my husband and I love to get dinner at the Crooked Rooster Pub and then walk across the street for a movie.
Heights Theater, The
210 E 14th St
Elmira Heights, NY 14903-1305, United States
The Heights Theater has one big screen and tons of ambiance, all for very low prices. The theater itself is decorated in Art Deco style and is just gorgeous. They even have a small balcony! The people that run the theater are really special--they are incredibly supportive of the community and often donate the theater space for community events. One of my favorite things is to attend showings of Veggie Tales videos at the theater. It's wonderful to see so many excited kids!

Oriental Theater
2230 N Farwell Ave
Milwaukee, WI 53202, United States
A beautiful old movie palace, with a couple screens, that has been a successful, functioning arthouse theater for quite some time. Its screens may tend toward the commerical sometimes (showing, e.g., "Angels & Demons"), but has a history of showing great arthouse fare of all kinds (e.g., the "Mystery Science Theater 3000" movie, the Robert Downey, Jr.
"Ricard III").
Downer Theater
2589 N Downer Ave
Milwaukee, WI 53211, United States
Has sometimes seemed like a poor cousin to Milwaukee's other Landmark Theater-chain-operated arthouse, The Oriential, and not quite as spectacular in terms of decor as the Oriental, but may run even more interesting (and non-U.S.) films (e.g., "Trainspotting," "The Butcher
Boy.")
ShowRoom, The
708 Cookman Ave
Asbury Park, NJ 07712, United States
The ShowRoom is the newest entertainment venue in Asbury Park, NJ. As one reviewer put it, the ShowRoom is a storefront church of cinema. A quirky, cubbyhole of culture, The ShowRoom acts as the film center of Asbury, providing an outlet for for foreign, independent, documentary and family films as well as a unique performance space for the arts community.

Reclaimed as a movie theatre art house several years ago, the Varsity will add a second screen summer 2009. Located in downtown Davis and serving a population including 35,000 college students, the Varsity offers first-run films that otherwise would either play briefly or not at all.
Plaza Theatre
1049 Ponce de Leon Ave NE
Atlanta, GA 30306, United States
The Plaza Theatre was built in 1939 as the cornerstone of the new automobile-centric Briarcliff Plaza Shopping Center. The first film shown was THE WOMEN.
After years of successful business, the area began to change. As the clientele became less sophisticated, so did the films. However, in the early 80s, the theatre was purchased by George Lefont. Mr. Lefont remodeled the theatre, enclosing the balcony for a second screen and updating most of the fixtures. He reopened the theatre by showing THE WOMEN.
In 2006, Mr. Lefont sold the theatre to local couple, Jonathan and Gayle Rej. They have focused on event-centered films with live audience interactive elements, including Splatter Cinema, the Silver Scream Spook Show, Flicks & Giggles, Summer Camp, and Art Opening and a Movie.
The theatre currently has two screens. The large downstairs auditorium, with beautiful gold velvet curtains, Heywood Wakefield rockers, and original light sconces, seats 375. It features a stage, spotlight, and backstage dressing area.
The upstairs theatre (formerly the balcony) is more intimate with fixed seating and blue linen curtains. It seats 175.
The enormous lobby enters under the restored marquee. It features a wall of classic film posters, restored ticket booth and concession stand, original crystal chandeliers and wall sconces, ever-changing art gallery, and classic video games.

CAMEO Art House Theatre
225 Hay St
Fayetteville, NC, United States
(910) 486-6633
The CAMEO Art House Theatre building was home to one of Fayetteville's first motion picture theatres: the New Dixie. Veteran moving picture man S.A. Lambert first bought out the original Dixie in 1908. He moved across the street to the Southside of Hay Street in 1914 and called it the New Dixie. At its opening Mr. Lambert screened 36 moving pictures a week and the New Dixie boasted having 336 fine opera chairs, ten electrical wall lights, and with the exception of a theatre in Highpoint the only mirror screen in North Carolina. Originally a scored stucco building with a large archway facing Hay Street it was given its current brick facade when the adjoining alley was enclosed to make room for Brady's Newsstand. The popularity of the New Dixie lead to the construction of the Broadway and Miracle Theaters which replaced the New Dixie as the state-of-the-art motion pictures houses in Fayetteville. The present CAMEO Theatre Building then hosted many local businesses, most notably Dixie Billiards and Eddie's Music.
Chris & Nasim Kuenzel, and Eric Lindstrom acquired the former Dixie Theater building in 1998. Sharing an interest in art films, architecture and downtown revitalization the three owners worked nights and weekends to create what everyone knows as the CAMEO today. The theater has 125 velvet covered cast iron opera style chairs, Dolby digital sound and projection system, four film screening formats and a lobby lounge where patrons can enjoy a glass of wine, imported beer, cup of coffee or cappuccino. The CAMEO Art House Theatre opened in October of 2000 with a Hollywood style gala to benefit the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County, complete with searchlight, red carpet and limos. And in March of 2003 the CAMEO added a second screen, the Loge, which contains 38 stadium style seats in an intimate screening room on the 2nd floor of the CAMEO building. The building is a mixed-use building, as it incorporates a loft that looks out over the CAMEO marquee to Hay Street. The mixed-use rehabilitation of the CAMEO has been recognized by Preservation North Carolina and in our local media as the "Coolest Place Downtown," The "Best Movie Theater in Fayetteville," the "Best Place to take a Date," and in the program of the 2002 Sundance Film Festival Program.

A great theater. There are only two rooms but each offers their own perks. The upstairs theater is smaller but more plush with a collection of couches for those who arrive a little early. The lower theater has an absolutely massive screen but isn't quite as comfortable. All around a good place though (especially for members).
