Baltimore Restaurants

(view on the map)
B Bistro
1501 Bolton St
Baltimore, MD 21217-4204, US
Quaint bistro in Bolton Hill. Very reasonably priced. Good wine list. Every entree I've tried has been excellent.
(view on the map)
Ze Mean Bean Cafe
1739 Fleet St
Baltimore, MD 21231-2918, US
Eastern European cuisine in Fells Point. Cozy atmosphere. Great for two--don't sit too close to the musicians though, it can get a little loud.
(view on the map)
Mughal Garden
920 N Charles St
Baltimore, MD 21201-5310, US
I've never actually eaten at the Mughal Garden, but I always get take-out there. The bengen bartha is wonderful.
(view on the map)
Minato
800 N Charles St
Baltimore, MD 21201-5318, US
Owned by Vietnamese and the J counterpart to Cafe Viet. Not a good sushi place. Unfortunately, with Shogun gone from Charles St, there's really not a quality sushi place in the city. Kawasaki has long since gone--not soon enough--and because of the goings-on at Kawasaki, I'm apt to stay away from Kawasaki Cafe in Fells Point.
(view on the map)
Jong Kak
11 W 20th St
Baltimore, MD 21218-6050, US
The best K restaurant in the city. Don't believe the hype about Nam Kang--although it's the perennial Citypaper fav, it's really not all that it's cracked up to be. Jong Kak is much better. Where did people go to watch the World Cup this summer? Jong Kak.
(view on the map)
Nam Kang
2126 Maryland Ave
Baltimore, MD 21218-5612, US
The perennial Citypaper favorite K restaurant is not all that it's cracked up to be. It actually used to be my favorite K restaurant in the city, but after being a regular customer for about 3 years, I was taken aback once when I was ignored for nearly 30 mins--not even brought a glass of water or boricha. I vowed never to go back after that but tried it out this past summer--just to see, of course. It's gone way downhill. Service is not so great. Food is pretty greasy and not as good as Jong Kak. Stay away. But they do have norebang upstairs now.

John Steven, Ltd.
1800 Thames St
Baltimore, MD 21231-3509, US
Great place for steamed mussels and loads of seafood and beer. Regular entrees are a little heavy and buttery. Nice atmosphere plus they have a heated patio for the cold months, which seem to be few and far between these days.
(view on the map)
Thairish
804 N Charles St
Baltimore, MD 21201-5308, US
Good, quick, and pretty cheap. I've never eaten anything but the pad thai, which varies in quality each trip. Who cares though? It's quick and easy. And when they're busy and the chef gets too many phone calls and answers and just says "not now, too busy" and hangs up, like a Thai version of the soup nazi, it's worth the trip . . . and the wait.
(view on the map)
Papermoon Diner
227 W 29th St
Baltimore, MD 21211-2905, US
Open 24 hours. Great selection of food to satisfy any need--breakfast at night, garden burgers, etc. Baltimore needs the Papermoon.
(view on the map)
Holy Frijoles
908 W 36th St
Baltimore, MD 21211-2483, US
Price-wise, it's possible to have two different experiences at Holy Frijoles--you could pay a little more, let's say about $10-$12, or you could pay a little less, how about $5 or so and get pretty much the same amount of food. At any rate, the food is good and the salsa is really garlicky.
(view on the map)
Golden West Cafe
1105 W 36th St
Baltimore, MD 21211-2410, US
You can't go wrong at this Hampden establishment. Most dishes are covered in their own green salsa. Try the breakfast polenta. There's usually a little bit of a wait, but never so long that you get frustrated. But if you do have to wait for 30 mins, just head across the street to Atomic Books and browse around a bit.
(view on the map)
Sasha's 527
527 N Charles St
Baltimore, MD 21201-5028, US
I haven't eaten here for a meal other than an occasional lunch, but the selection is very good. Kind of like a frou-frou deli. A little pricey, but good nonetheless.
(view on the map)
XS
1307 N Charles St
Baltimore, MD 21201-5704, US
Yet another Charles St joint that I've never eaten a full meal at other than to grab something quick for lunch or before jumping on a train to points north. I've heard good things, but haven't sampled them for myself yet. The coffee is a 6 out of 10.
(view on the map)
Donna's
800 N Charles St
Baltimore, MD 21201-5318, US
Mostly known as a coffee bar, Donna's also has some nice sandwiches and tasty dinner entrees.
(view on the map)
Donna's
3101 Saint Paul St
Baltimore, MD 21218-3840, US
Charles Village counterpart to Donna's in Mt Vernon. Good coffee. Tasty sandwiches and dinner entrees. But go for the coffee.
(view on the map)
City Cafe
1001 Cathedral St
Baltimore, MD 21201-5403, US
A Mt Vernon staple with great coffee, great sandwiches, a nice atmosphere, and wireless.
(view on the map)
Legal Sea Foods
100 E Pratt St
Baltimore, MD 21202-1009, US
Seafood restaurant at the Inner Harbor. Fish is fresh and good. Great place to bring parents visiting Baltimore for the first time. Must contend with Harbor crowds though.
(view on the map)
Rusty Scupper
402 Key Hwy
Baltimore, MD 21230-3973, US
Expensive restaurant with a great view of the Inner Harbor.
(view on the map)
Obrycki's
1727 E Pratt St
Baltimore, MD 21231-1819, US
The best crab place in Baltimore--forget about Phillips. A little pricey, but if you want the true experience--brown paper as a tablecloth, little wooden hammers to break the crabs with, plenty of Old Bay--this is the place.
(view on the map)
Bertha's
734 S Broadway
Baltimore, MD 21231-3406, US
The cool "Eat Bertha's Mussels" bumper stickers are ubiquitous in Baltimore. But that's pretty much the coolest thing about this place. Go there once to say you've been there, but then get over-buttery entrees and steamed seafood for less elsewhere.
(view on the map)
Owl Bar
1 E Chase St
Baltimore, MD 21202-2526, US
Restaurant/bar on the ground floor of the Belvedere. Big martinis, but the food isn't as lavish as the decor.
(view on the map)
Brewer's Art
1106 N Charles St
Baltimore, MD 21201-5557, US
One of the finest watering holes in Baltimore has a double life--upstairs you can rub shoulders with upwardly mobile beautiful people and downstairs you can hang with the regulars and bike messengers (although recent trips have suggested that the downstairs dungeon is becoming a bit gentrified). Cuisine-wise, you have the same kind of double life. Upstairs, there's a full service dining room with creative, but a little pricey, entrees. Downstairs, you can have pub grub with a twist, like the amazing garlic fries.
(view on the map)
Helmand
806 N Charles St
Baltimore, MD 21201-5308, US
Owned by the brother of Hamid Karzai, the PM of Afghanistan, this is quite possibly the best restaurant in Baltimore. Nothing is bad. Everything is reasonably priced. And service is great.
(view on the map)
Tapas Teatro
1711 N Charles St
Baltimore, MD 21201-5801, US
Cool tapas place (the first that appeared in Baltimore, I believe) right next to The Charles. Nice place when you're feeling hungry but don't want to eat too much and might want to catch a flick. Martinis are good. They have sangria too.
(view on the map)
Ban Thai
340 N Charles St
Baltimore, MD 21201-4301, US
No nonsense thai food. Don't expect anything fancy, but the food is good. You might see the owner and his family sorting and cutting vegetables on a table near the bar.
(view on the map)
Amicci's
231 S High St
Baltimore, MD 21202-4454, US
Amicci's had a facelift recently, adding a new bar and making the place a little bigger. I miss the red and white checked tablecloths, but the food is still amazing and the prices are comparatively very low. One of my favorite Italian restaurants.
(view on the map)
Vaccaro's
222 Albemarle St
Baltimore, MD 21202-4338, US
There really is only one place to get dessert in Baltimore and this is it.
(view on the map)
Iggie's
818 N Calvert St
Baltimore, MD 21202-3706, US
Neapolitan-style pizza. I'm not a big pizza fan but this is no ordinary pizza joint. BYOB for a fun evening.
(view on the map)
Nacho Mama's
2907 Odonnell St
Baltimore, MD 21224-4821, US
Quirky mexican restaurant known for its Elvis decor (think Papermoon with Elvis) and a cheap bar. Go on a weekdays to avoid the meathead Canton types.
(view on the map)
Mama's On The Half Shell
2901 Odonnell St
Baltimore, MD 21224-4821, US
Good bread and wine list. Food is priced within reason. Go early and avoid the crowds.
(view on the map)
Pete's Grill
3130 Greenmount Ave
Baltimore, MD 21218-3417, US
Cheap greasy spoon with good breakfast fare.
(view on the map)
Patrick's of Pratt Street
934 W Pratt St
Baltimore, MD 21223-2643, US
Oldest Irish Pub in Baltimore. Usual pub grub. A good stop on the way back from the B&O.
(view on the map)
Never On Sunday
829 N Charles St
Baltimore, MD 21201-5366, US
I haven't been in this place since it burned down and was subsequently redone. From the outside looking in, it looks a lot nicer and cleaner. Used to be the place to get a late-night bite after a night out on Charles St.
(view on the map)
Bay Cafe
2809 Boston St
Baltimore, MD 21224-4814, US
The meeting place for the LSV-Kelly Benefit Strategies cycling team once a month. Renowned for its shrimp salad sandwich, I'd go there for that, but vacate quickly before it gets taken over by drunk, rowdy, Canton frat boy types.
(view on the map)
Akbar
823 N Charles St
Baltimore, MD 21201-5316, US
Quiet, unassuming, Northern Indian restaurant.
(view on the map)
Zodiac
1726 N Charles St
Baltimore, MD 21201-5802, US
Diner-like eatery right next door to the Club Chuck. Nothing spectacular, but a great atmosphere.
(view on the map)
Petit Louis
4800 Roland Ave
Baltimore, MD 21210-2393, US
Amazing French restaurant. It's a bit of a splurge, but well worth it.
(view on the map)
Dizzy Izzie's
300 W 30th St
Baltimore, MD 21211-2807, US
Used to be a bit more blue collar (read: hipsterish). The new decor makes it look a little more family friendly but the clientele remains similar to the olden days. Simple home-cooked style food.
(view on the map)
Common Ground
819 W 36th St
Baltimore, MD 21211-2508, US
Baltimore's best place for coffee is also good for muffins, bagels, and cookies. They sell #s of their house blend, b/t/w.
(view on the map)
Evergreen
501 W Cold Spring Ln
Baltimore, MD 21210-2717, US
College-y atmosphere. Good wireless connection. Interesting muffin selection.
(view on the map)
City Lights
307 Light St
Baltimore, MD 21202-1011, US
Yet another Inner Harbor seafood restaurant. Not as fancy as the Rusty Scupper and not quite as good as Legal Seafoods, but it's there if you need it.
(view on the map)
J. Paul's
301 Light St
Baltimore, MD 21202-1037, US
Drink beer and eat pub grub with tourists.
(view on the map)
Cheesecake Factory
201 E Pratt St
Baltimore, MD 21202-1039, US
Yes, I've eaten here before. It's a Cheesecake Factory. It's in the Inner Harbor. Need I say more?
(view on the map)
Sip & Bite
2200 Boston St
Baltimore, MD 21231-3203, US
If you really need fish and chips after a night in Canton.
(view on the map)
Sofi's Crepes
1723 N Charles St
Baltimore, MD 21201-5801, US
A wide variety of crepes to satisfy your French dessert craving.
(view on the map)
Claddagh Pub
2918 Odonnell St
Baltimore, MD 21224-4820, US
Cozy Irish-ish pub on Canton Square. As with most Canton establishments, it's best to go early to avoid the frat boys and sorority girls who have money.
(view on the map)
Dukem
1100 Maryland Ave
Baltimore, MD 21201-5510, US
You don't have to go to Adams Morgan for Dukem. The food is good, but the service is just like the Five Seasons--slow. However, unlike the Five Seasons, the people here are nice.
(view on the map)
Sabatino's
901 Fawn St
Baltimore, MD 21202-4413, US
Cozy, family-feel, Italian restaurant, specializing in homemade pasta, which is perfect with the marinara sauce. Entrees will run in the $20 range, but the pasta dishes are much more reasonable. Also, the bread from H&S is amazing.
