Not Your Average Street Race

Amidst the exhilarating atmosphere of the Friday Night Street Party, local teams and professional drivers get serious about speed as they battle each other bumper-to-bumper in the Go-Kart challenge.

The event is filled with dramatic twists and turns as teams attempt to annihilate each other in heat races as they work towards a thrilling championship race. And it all takes place in the streets of Jackson.

Horsepower Hits the Streets
Classic cars, street rods, muscle cars, actual track cars and more will line the streets of downtown Jackson at what is set to be one of the largest classic car shows of the season. The show will take place amidst the energy and excitement of the Friday Night Street Party.

Vehicles of all makes and models, from the deuce coupes to the slammed s10 pickups, are expected to take over Michigan Avenue and across streets in the north and south direction. And you can be a part of this amazing line-up! Bring your classic ride downtown to show it off, and meet other car collectors and enthusiasts as you and your family enjoy the electrifying atmosphere that racing brings to Jackson.

Carrying on the Tradition

Racing in the Jackson community is firmly rooted in the past. Being just down the highway from Detroit influenced Jackson's youth to pick up on the high performance cars. Local speedways brought horsepower a place to play, whether that meant going around in circles or in a straight line from a dead stop. Local drive-ins like The Dome and Bee's brought a place for like-minded people to hang out and show off their rides.

Many of those racing hot-spots are long gone. The Dome moved off the Ave, but the tradition of cool cars that go fast has not left Jackson. Come downtown Friday night to experience the big blocks and flames as well as to take part in the festivities surrounding RaceWeek 2006.

A Test of Wills
There can only be one winner at RaceWeek 24. And with identical high-performance go-karts that combine speed with durability, this 24-hour high-endurance, high-energy race will come down to passion and skill.

The toughest of racers compete with each other and test their own stamina, racing side-by-side for up to 750 miles at speeds of over 50 mph during the 24-hour time period. Friendly rivalries heat up as each team tries to prove they have what it takes to go home a winner.

RaceWeek 24 is held on the combined oval-course at Jackson Speedway, which is considered to be one of the best facilities in the nation. It is known for its intense races, and according to drivers, is one of the safest tracks to battle on.

Race for Charity
Charitable groups and organizations will make history competing this year in RaceWeek 24. Driving as many as 1,400 laps, teams will have raised money from sponsor pledges for each lap completed. No matter which team finishes first, all participants and the charities they represent will be winners.

400 Miles of IRL Excitement
RaceWeek reaches its pinnacle with the Indy 400 when some of the fastest cars and the best IRL drivers in the country vie with each other for that coveted checkered flag. It’s 400 miles of non-stop thrills and breathtaking excitement!

Action extends from the track to the pits, and there's not a bad seat in the house to see this action. These 670 hp open wheeled racers cover the 2 mile track at MIS at over 200 mph, turning blistering laps with other cars only inches away.

Last year the race was dominated by Bryan Herta, a Warren, Michigan, native. Herta has come out as a tough competitor to beat this season, but that won’t stop his foes from trying to up the ante in this ultra-competitive race. Topping the list of contenders is Danica Patrick, the lone female in the IRL. She is joined by driving legends Helio Castroneves, Dario Franchitti, Dan Wheldon and more.

Also making an appearance will be Marco Andretti, a young driver whose lineage almost guarantees that he will be a strong force to be reckoned with on the circuit. Andretti is the son of Michael Andretti and the grandson of the great Mario Andretti.

But whether seasoned veteran or rookie, each and every driver is sure to have just one thing on their mind – winning.

Hungry for Horsepower?
The Greater Jackson Chamber of Commerce hosts the "Lunch in the Fast Lane" on Friday, July 28 at Daryl's Downtown. The Luncheon serves as the traditional kickoff to the RaceWeek Friday Night festivities and is an event that is looked forward to year after year.

The stars of the Indy Racing League will dine with local and regional dignitaries, community business leaders, MIS representatives and others.
