Grave Of Peter Montague
A first settler in Lancaster County, he arrived in 1645 and built a home at the head of navigation on the Western Branch of the Corrotoman River where he is buried. Once Lancaster County was formed in 1651, he served as the first burgess to the Virginia House Of Burgesses. There is a monument at the site of his grave.

Chesapeake Trail Western Branch Corrotoman River
There is good parking on Rt. 3 and an easy, rustic trail through the riparian forest adjoining the headwaters of the river. Descriptive signage has been provided by the Northern Neck Audobon Society, and The County of Lancaster is the owner. The lower trail runs along an old ox cart path and has some benches midway with a large deck once you reach the river. Enjoy superb water views from the deck, about 0.25 miles from the road. Access for canoes or kayaks carried in can be made at this point. A looping upper trail runs along the ridge above the river back to the parking area. Important, apply bug repellant for ticks and chiggers in summer and respect adjoining private property! Click for a map of the water access sites in the Northern Neck.

Wharton's Grove

Zoom in Camp meetings were held in this grove of towering oaks on the banks of the Corrotoman River beginning in 1893, and people traveled to revivals by boat from all over the Chesapeake Bay. A quarter mile long pier extended to deep water so steamboats and hundreds of smaller boats could tie up alongside as up to a 1,000 people strolled the pier in their finery. Tents first, then cottages were built among the oaks using a tent-style architecture that has been locally copied, and the now, private homes, and grounds are cherished by owners and the community.
