Another generation of Cooper's has recently stepped up to the pit to make the old man proud. Middle brother Roy Cooper and his son Mark are the proud owners of the newest Cooper's, smokin' on I-10 in Junction since August of 1999.
Duke's has perhaps the best family atmosphere of any BBQ joint around. The indoor barn-style restaurant is huge. The long outdoor patio is heated and enclosed in the winter. The lot is beautiful, with an enclosed and maintained large field where kids play football and roam while the adults talk and eat. The self-service bar is huge, and it is stocked with free self-serve ice cream. Oh, and the BBQ is very good. The price is slightly above average, but still reasonable.
This place has been around for 50 years, and they are still working the original pit. Vencil Mares has been cooking here since he returned from the war. The locals know it as "Vencil's", not "Taylor Cafe". A small place, off the beaten path, but well worth the hunt -- his turkey sausage and pork ribs will melt in your mouth.
