Annie Kempton, 1896 While writing the book Remembering Women Murdered by Men, the Cultural Memory Group discovered a series of memorials to Annie Kempton, the first memorials in Canada created in memory of a woman who had been murdered. Annie Kempton was born about 1881 in Nova Scotia. She died in 1896, murdered at age 14; she was buried on her 15th birthday. A monument to her memory was erected by the people of the town, and may still be seen at Mount Hope Cemetery. Three memorials mark her death.
