1901 City Directory. Gottfried Lenzer was born in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1856 and came to America in 1881. Emmett Butler attributes much of the Butlers' success to Lenzer's skill in estimating construction costs. According to a report in Stone magazine of June 1900 Lenzer and fellow Butler employee Joseph Bourgeault had leased a stone quarry in Marquette, Michigan. Soon after Lenzer went into business as an architect.
