1899 City Directory. George Schmid worked for the ornamental sculpure firm of Purdy and Hutcheson. In the 1899 CD he lists his occupation as "caster" but in the 1900 Census he is a "stone carver." He was born in Germany in 1855 and came to St. Paul in 1882. An 1889 passport application reveals that George Schmid, a carpenter, was traveling to Munich to study sculpture. He raised a large family in St. Paul and by 1920 had moved to San Francisco with his work. This address is from the 1900 Census.
