Barnacle Bill's Tavern
Noisy, Crowded, Smokey, Peanut Shells on the floor, but the burgers are tremendous. This small tavern parked on the water in Rumson, NJ has a faithful following. Everytime I have been there, there is a wait. And the wait is worth it. You will find traditional American fare with plenty of adult beverages. If you brng the kids, you can take them out on the nearby dock which overlooks the Oceanic Bridge over the Shrewsbury River.

The Ark Pub and Eatery
A wonderful spot for dinner with family or friends. This cozy neighborhood location just east of the Railroad tracks offers traditional American Cuisine with a nod to the local fisherman. If you like Burgers or Blackened Tuna Salad, this is the place for you. After a day at the beach, this spot heats up with a band on Friday and Saturday nights. It is walking distance from Bay Head.

Dorbrook Recreation Park
This park is located in Colts Neck, NJ. It is, in my opinion, part of the best county park system in the country. This park has 535 acres of land abutting the Swimming River Reservoir. You can rollerblade, cycle, run, or walk on the 2.5 mile trail that surrounds the park. The county has added two features that make this park unique. The first is a sprayground. Just imagine a playground that is always squirting water. The sprayground operates during the summer months. I suggest you get there early as it fills up quickly with the youngsters. The second is a Challenger Playground. This is a place for every child to play. If your child is visually impaired or needs wheelchair accessibility, they will have a great time here.

Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center
This Center is one of the many secrets of Monmouth County and New Jersey. It sits on the shore of pristine reservoir that is part of 1204 acre preserve. At the Center you can grab a pair of binoculars and watch a bald eagle in its nest. You could also walk, run or bike on the adjacent 5 mile trail that surrounds the reservoir. There are three areas to park. The first is by the Center, the second is on Georgia Tavern Road, the third is at the activity center just minutes away.

Six Flags Great Adventure
If you live anywhere in the northeast corridor, you have had to heard of Great Adventure. This park is really making a concerted effort to bring in more and more people. They claim to have more roller coasters then any other park in the US. With the addition of Hurricane Harbor(a water park) and the always popular Drive thru safari, GA is a great spot to spend a day. Some suggestions: Go very early! Try and be there when they open the park. Pack a lunch! There are a couple of places where you can sit and enjoy a picnic. Get a Season Pass! If you live within a hour of Jackson, the savings you will see with just two visits is worth the money.
UPDATE!!!I rode El Toro(the new rollercoaster) over the weekend and it is incredible! Plan a day to ride it.

The Music Man Ice Cream Shoppe
It's summer time and you want an ice cream sundae or a milk shake. But you want to hear "Hello Dolly" while you are eating. Believe it or not, there is a place for you. The staff at the Music Man Singing Ice Cream Shoppe performs a caberet style show to full audiences every night during the summer. I guarantee the staff will have you or someone from your table involved in the show. This spot is worth a trip.

Hoffman's Ice Cream
Incredible! Astounding! Terrific! Can you tell I like the ice cream? Try the banana or the turtle or the coffee royal with chocolate sprinkles. The line in the summer can snake out the door, but the wait is worth every minute. If the line in Point Pleasant is too long, go the the store in Spring Lake. The line will probably be as long there.

The Windmill Restaurants
Home of the best hot dogs in Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Now I know I will get some flack from fans of Max's in Long Branch or Jersey Freeze in Freehold. But I stand by my choice. In addition to the "Dogs", you can find chili and cheese fries to compliment your meal. One more plus for the Windmill Restaurants, there are nine of them in Monmouth & Ocean Counties.

Crown Palace Chinese Restaurant
This restaurant is part of small chain of Chinese Restaurants in Central NJ and Staten Island. The food on premises is outstanding. The service is impeccable. Crown Palace also caters to the local Asian population. You will find 2 Menus there. Yes, two menus, one for the non-asian client and the other for the asian client.
There is another location on route 35 in Middletown. There is an asian grocery located besides that eatery.

Klein's Fish Market & Waterside Caf
There a no better way to enjoy seafood then sitting dockside with well prepared seafood (check out the lobster) with a bottle of your finest BYOB. Klein's is an institution in Belmar since 1929. It still operates as a seafood market, but now has one of the premier spots for dining at the Shore. One quick note, they have a number of spots to enjoy your meal; casual, formal, and Sushi Bar.

The Algonquin Theatre
Growing up at the shore, we had a number of drive-in movies nearby. But the best spot to watch a movie was at a local beach hotel. The Algonquin has resurrected this memory with their summer series of outdoor movies on the back wall of their theatre. Every week they have new classic movie. The summer of 2005 had the theme of "Dance". As soon as this year's theme is announced, I will add it to this site.

Rod's Olde Irish Tavern
Think "Cheers" at the shore. This Irish Pub has a list of regulars that include Bill Parcells. It is a great place to watch a game. Take your pick: baseball, football, and NCAA's. It is the best place in Sea Girt to have a beer.

Just like it sister restaurant in Red Bank, this place packs them in. The food is excellent with the emphasis on quality with quanity. Stop by with a six pack of Dos Equis, your favorite girl and have a great time. The staff here and in Red Bank are outstanding.

Located on the "other side of the tracks" from the "hippest town in NJ", Two if by Sea is a great find for seafood lovers. They move to this location from the Eatontown area and brought a following with them. You will find a wine list that will surprise you. Give it a go!

Ocean Grove Auditorium
Here is an idea for a perfect night at the Jersey Shore. Leave work a little early and head to dinner at nearby Asbury Park or Ocean Grove. Then head to the boardwalk for a quiet stroll. As the lights start to flicker on in the parks and streets, head over the Auditorium for a concert. The entertainers tend to fall in the older demographics but there is not a better indoor venue around.

Run by runners, this small store is the best spot to pick up running gear. It carries everything you might need for that jog on the boardwalk or training for the Jersey Shore Marathon.

Octopus's Garden & Fish House
A great find just 6 miles off the island. This family owned and operated is the epitome of cleanliness, great food, and super service. The fish was fresh and unique. There were at least three varieties of fish I have never heard of on the menu. I have heard there is a location on the island that has been there since the '70's, so I am going to try that out the next time I am in LBI.

Deep Cut Gardens
Nestled just 1.5 miles off the Garden State Parkway is this wonderful 54 acre oasis called Deep Cut Gardens. This site was welled to Monmouth County Park System in 1977. You will find greenhouses, compost experiments, and a garden library. I guarantee you will spend hours here if you like plants.

Monmouth Racetrack
In horse racing circles, this track is considered one of the crown jewels. It is located just minutes off the Garden State Parkway. It has an enormous local following. On a given Saturday during the summer meet, you will find families spread out on blankets with barbeques blazing. One thing you can plan is to have a race named after an occasion(wedding) or birthday. You can scream "Go Baby Go" if you like. Two important events are the Haskell Invitational held in August and the upcoming Breeders Cup in 2007. The opening day is May 13th,2006

Lakewood BlueClaws
Dollar for Dollar the best entertainment value at the Jersey Shore. You can see exciting minor league baseball or spend an afternoon in the sun. This single A Philadelphia Phillies franchise is considered one of the best run in the Minor League system. Pick a day and I can almost guarantee that there will be a promotion on that day. Arrive early and you can maybe get an autograph of a future major leaguer

The Robert J Novins Planetarium
It is 100 degrees in the shade and you have seen all of the kiddie fare at the local multiplex. Or it is a crystal clear night with hundreds of stars in the sky and you do not know where the North Star is. Or the kids are driving you nuts and you want to do something different, check out the Planetarium. They have outdoor sky shows and indoor special events.

Jenkinson's Boardwalk
If you are coming to the Shore for one day or for the entire summer, you have to visit Jenkison's Boardwalk. Especially if you have kids between the ages of 2-11. The amusement park part of the boardwalk is always crowded with families putting their children on the the train ride or the "Wacky Bus". There is even bumper cars and roller coasters for your older children. ***A SPECIAL NOTE***
ON THE EASTER WEEKEND THEY HAVE A SPECIAL TICKET SALE. You can purchase 2 for 1 ticket books during that weekend, it can save you quite a bit of money if you plan on visiting more than once.

Count Basie Theatre
You will find year long events at this 1500 seat theatre. My wife says she went to it when it was just a movie theatre. The acts change through out the year. You could see comedy shows, ballet, jazz, or children's shows. Check out their web site for up to date events.

Allaire State Park and Allaire Village
Allaire State Park is best known for its incredible 19th-century ironmaking town, Allaire Village, and its kid friendly full size steam trains on the Pine Creek Railroad. But you can also find fishing on The Manasquan River, or camping in the Pine Coastal Forest.

Sandy Hook Bike Path
Sandy Hook is the New Jersey unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. You will find a two lane bike path along the eastern side of this skinny barrier island. The path runs north to the Lighthouse, Fort Hamilton, Monmouth County's Marine Science High School and some great wonderful blueberries during the season. During the summer, if you drive in you have to pay for parking. If you bike in, no charge.

Treasure Island
Treasure Island is located in the heart of the Manasquan River just west of the Route 35 Bridge. You can kayak or canoe out to this spot from the public docks at Richmond and Broadway in Point Pleasant. Legend has it that Robert Louis Stevenson got the idea for his novel of the same name when he vacationed in Brielle. You will find small beaches, cliffs with a tire swing and paths on the interior of the island. Another way out to the island is on the Manasquan Water Taxi. The cost of the Taxi is about $16./head.

Orchestra of St. Peter's by the Sea

The Festival of the Atlantic is held at the Point Pleasant Beach Inlet on Wednesday nights. Father Alphonse Stephenson puts together an incredible group of musicians to entertain you "for Free" at the water's edge. On the 4th of July and Labor Day, they will add Fireworks and Flag waving parachutists.

This is the epicenter of the NJ surfing kingdom. Back in 1959, a local NJ kid (named Ron) bought 3 surfboards from California, kept one, and sold two for a profit(it was his father's idea). You can get a pedicure, a manicure, a facial, even have your shoes shined. But the treatment that should get you there and keep you coming back is the SHAVE!! A well trained barber will apply hot towels and lotions to your face. Then using a 3" straight razor remove any stubble on your face. Do this once and you will keep coming back, I guarantee it.

Located just north of route 18, you will find one of NJ worst kept secrets. Delicious Orchards is the home of some of the best pies and freshest produce, and run by two families for over 40 years. My recommendations would be the Apple Tart Pie, the Apple Cider, the Apple Cider Donuts, and the Blueberry Crumb Pie. I am sure many NJ residents could list many more favorites. Make sure you visit this wonderful store.

Incredible Lobster Roll!! My family had dinner there on Saturday and the food was tremendous. I recommend any of the seafood sandwiches. The wait staff was knowledgeable and friendly. Also if you are looking for fish for home cooking, the prices look very fair.
