Uri, India: "flattened"; Army seizes Uri town, bars media entr
From: The South-East Asia Earthquake and Tsunami Blog

Boniyar (J & K), Oct. 8 (PTI): The Army has seized Uri and barred media from entering the town of Baramullah district in Jammu and Kashmir even as the injured were being evacuated hours after the 7-plus magnitude earthquake flattened it this morning.

Survivors of the giant quake said in this hamlet, 20 km from Uri, that the death toll was "much higher" and the entire town had been flattened.

They complained that the relief and rescue efforts had not come speedily and were not enough.

Quake rocks Indonesia's Aceh

A tectonic quake measuring 5.8 on the Richter Scale rocked Aceh Singkil District, Aceh Province of Indonesia, at about 11:30 a.m. local time on Saturday.

The tremor was also felt in Gunung Sitoli, Nias and Sibolga, North Sumatra, said official news agency Antara.

An official of the Meteorological and Geophysics Office for First Territory of North Simatra, Hartono, said the epicenter of the quake was in Sumatra Island's western coast or about 15 km from Aceh Singkil.

He said the quake was laid at 2.2 degrees northern latitude and 97.7 degrees eastern longitude.

UPDATE: From the Rise-Pak site, this report:"Lamnian, Tehsil Hattian has blocked road access so no relief has reached. Although a helicopter has heli-dropped some food and other necessities."

No tools, no roads, little hope in Lamnian
In the remote quake-hit mountain village of Lamnian, most homes have been destroyed, there are no tools to sift through the rubble and residents are busy burying the dead.

Hope of finding survivors in the ruins was virtually nil as rescue efforts have ground to a standstill, according to Jan-Peter Stellema, who works for the Paris-based medical aid charity Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF) in Lamnian.

“I’ve seen very little rescue operations going on today and when I ask people, sometimes they say, ‘Well, we heard them yesterday but then they died’,
