STREETS FOR FEET!
A Pavement-to-Plaza Demonstration Project in Hollywood

WHAT/WHERE/WHEN? We'll be turning a small stretch of Hudson Avenue at Hollywood Boulevard into a temporary community plaza for Park[ing] Day through the rest of the weekend (9/17-19).

SCHEDULE

Friday, 9/17, 10 am - 4 pm: Hollywood Community Studio will ask you where Hollywood needs more open space, plus take portraits of Hollywood residents and workers. Amazing chalk artist LAnt Art will decorate a portion of our street in honor of parking day. Or, just stop by and relax and watch the world pass you by on Hollywood Boulevard, or play board games or get creative at our arts and crafts table.
*Please note: we'll no longer be having a happy-hour after party in the space...*

Saturday, 9/18: From 10-11:30, Artstring Boutique will lead a drop-in knitting class. Local performance space Paul Gleason Theatre will provide performances throughout the day, from belly dancing to show tunes. LACE, a local arts organization, will host their "Fundreds" program in the space throughout the day. Or just stop by to have a seat, play a game, or get crafty!

Sunday, 9/19: Come get a free massage from Carlos Chiropractic from 10-12, and get a free 7-day fitness pass from the Hollywood YMCA. We'll also host fun games like hula hooping, water balloon tosses, mummy races and more. As always, there'll be tables for sitting, games for playing, and art supplies for crafting.

For more information, please visit http://www.hollywoodcommunitystudio.org.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? The City of Los Angeles is considering a city-wide initiative that would encourage local community groups and neighborhood councils to identify underutilized stretches of roadway to turn into parks and plazas. Pavement-to-plaza programs provide inexpensive ways to create public space -- space that can be tailored to suit the needs of the community. Does your neighborhood need outdoor dining areas, public exercise equipment, a playground, or a dog park? Small sections of road could potentially be turned into any of these types of spaces.

Additionally, Los Angeles is one of the most park-poor cities in the country (Trust for Public Land 2007), and Council District 13 (where this demonstration project is located) is the most park-poor district in the city (LA Neighborhood Land Trust, 2008). Purchasing land for park space is often too expensive, especially now that government budgets are being drastically reduced. As such, inexpensive and creative methods of developing new public spaces are essential. This demonstration project will help show City residents that a pavement-to-parks program can create a solution to this problem for little cost, and with little impact on traffic.

WHO IS ORGANIZING THE PROJECT? The Hollywood Community Studio (HCS) is organizing this Hudson Pavement-to-Plaza demonstration project in conjunction with the development of a city-wide program, with the support of the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles. HCS researches the physical and social changes taking place in Hollywood, and helps link local residents and small businesses with the opportunities that arise from redevelopment (like access to new jobs and housing).
