V.I. Warshawski's Chicago
The markers on this map point to the real landmarks or locales in Chicago that Paretsky refers to in her V.I. Warshawski mysteries. The quotations and commentary about each place, however, are intended to show that Paretsky's settings are not simply colorful backdrop and atmosphere for her mysteries, but part of a larger argument. Her settings, whether real or imagined, are coded, signifiers for class, character, and community. The lone detective, like the lone cowboy, crosses (often violently) the boundaries of these zones, and is able to read them.
