To Anonymous. It is good to include vacant properties that are for sale. There have been buildings on H Street that have been advertised for years and "For Sale or Lease" but have never been sold. In addition, the new vacant property law gives for sale unoccupied properties an limited time exemption before they pay Class III tax rates.

I hope you will remove the vacant properties from your list that have been advertised for sale. It doesn't seem fair to hassle an owner who is unwilling or unable to restore a vacant property but wants to sell to someone who can fix it up. And what's wrong with holding a vacant property as long as it doesn't pose a community problem?

The residents in our area are very concerned about the property locted @ 1405 North Carolina Avenue, NE. This property has been vacant for more than 6 months or so. There are people that sleep inside, sell drugs, etc. The property is an eye sore.

In the case of the business locations, other than recovering tax money. How is going to help the community at large to list these as vacant properties? I have a small business that I would locate to H Street, but a lot of the owners have no desire to improve their vacant buildings.

One thing I'm curious about: what is the status of the properties w/ light blue markers (i.e. "Community Reported")? Also, I notice that the abandoned property (#52) at 215 Warren St, NE has been completely gutted, leaving only the street-side facade. They've taped a Xeroxed sheet saying "215 Warren St" on the front door, and affixed a very inexpensive mailbox. I'm just curious if they're somehow exploiting a loophole...

The designations are defined briefly in the description in the upper left corner. "DCRA list - No Homestead" means that the property has been identified by DCRA as vacant and the person is not receiving a homestead exemption. Many vacant properties are receiving a homestead exemption which is tax fraud. The goal is to get properties which the community has identified onto the DCRA list, and then these properties onto the OTR (Office of Tax and Revenue) list where they will be taxed at Class III rates (5% of annual assessed value) or obtain a Class III exception. Under the new law there is a maximum of 3 years for Class III exceptions.

ANC 6A extends south to East Capitol St and there are vacant properties reported between Constitution and East Capitol St. You can click on the map and hold down the mouse button while dragging the mouse to move the map around.

Can anyone explain what the various designations mean, though? The vacant building next door to me is classified as "DCRA list - No Homestead," but I don't know what that means in terms of what, if anything, needs to be done.

This is great and very eye opening. But I would like to point out that as a resident of 6A, who lives on 11th between Constitution and the Park that the map does not include all of 6A. We have several problem properties and I thought they were reported, but I can't tell from the map because of only shows upto Constitution. Are you updating the map? I will report the properties to the link on the ANC board.
